Beatle sounding guitar?

Hi, I cannot afford a 6 0r 12 string Rickenbacker. What decent guitar would simulate the 64-66 Beatle guitar sound? The amp used will be custom made to simulate a Vox AC30. Thanks, Don

I would recommend the Epiphone Casino. John, Paul, and George used this guitar extensively during the 64-66 period. I have one, it is a very nice guitar.

Thanks for the replies. I was advised on another forum that the Casino's are made differently then they were back then and to find a guitar using V90 pickups. I saw an Ephiphone Wildcat with VP90 pickups in a catalog reasonably priced, Would this have a Beatle sound? I think Danelectro's were used in the movie "That Thing You Do". They kind of look like old Sear's Silvertone's. I'll try one out. Thanks, Don

Everything made today is made differently than 40 years ago. The Casino (at least the one I have) still uses the P90 pickups that were used on the Casinos that the Beatles used.

just thought I'd add a second recommendation for the Casino. I also use one and it passes muster for me on the Beatles stuff I do from Revolver...

Avoid the Wild Cat at all costs. My lead guitarist ordered one without playing it.........2 hours. We sent it back in 2 hours.
The Casino plays very well and sounds good. We borrowed one and recorded two songs with it. We were all impressed.

Thanks for the replies. I will stay away from the Wildcat Sparkmonkey. I've discovered I can get a Rickenbacker Dakota for under $700, it has humbucking(?) pickups. The 330 will run around $900. If the Dakota has a Beatle sound I'll get that. If not it will probably be the Casino. Thanks to replies. ,Don

After reading all of the replies I think the amp has more bearing on the mechanics of the Beatle sound than the guitar. The Vox AC30 amp is the common mechanical element in possibly all of the recordings from 1964-66. They went through several different guitars, Rics, Strats, Gibsons, Gretschs, Ephiphones. Songs like "And Your Bird Can Sing", "Nowhere Man", "Day Tripper", "PAPERBACK WRITTER","Baby You Can Drive My Car"' all are distinctive. The common thread they all have is probably the AC30. I don't know I'm a drummer! Thanks, Don
