Arrow 1st time 4 clinic - please critique my cover

Hi there...this is my 1st time post in the clinic.....although not my 1st ever post on the bbs. My other account "axehead" has been disbaled because I changed the e-mail addy on it!! Had to create this one just so I can post in the meantime!

Anyway, could you guys please take a quick listen to a track I did a couple of months back. It's a cover of "Escape" by Enrique Inglesisas. Here's the link:

http://www.studiosonic.net/mp3/escapemix.mp3

It's the 1st 2 mins of the song. I recorded it in Cakewalk Guitar Tracks, but then accidently deleted the bun file, so it is no more! It was just a rough mix. It was my first attempt at anything longer than about 1 minute!

Equipment used:

SBlive Player 1024 (Audiophile 2496 in the post!!!!)
Midiman Audio Buddy
AT 4033 mic
Line 6 POD
Yamaha RGZ Custom Guitar
Tanglewood Rebel 4K Bass
Propellerheads's Reason for the drums

Please take a listen and tell me what you think. I'm quite pleased with it, but I'd like to know what you guys think of the way it was recorded/mixed.

Thanks!

axehead

My first impression was that the vocals are getting throttled a bit by the guitars. The flanger on the one guit is a bit strong, and as it is right now is causing more harm than good.

The simple little lead guit part is nice (comes in @ :56 for example). However the tone on it is too muffled for my tastes.

Did the lead vocal hit the correct note when it came in (@ :16)? I thought there were some pitch issues at a couple of other spots.

A weird drum thing at 1:14 and 1:19. Intentional?

On the positive side... I thought all the different guitar parts were interesting and worked well together (they're just choking off the voice a bit). I think the melody was nice too. Nice double tracking on the vocals - the whole effect fit the song well (just bring 'em out!!).

Thanks 4 the comments. I see what you mean about the flanger.

I guess my vocal pitching needs some work. I only did it in one take, so I'm sure that could be corrected. Also, when I recorded it I was at Uni, living in a small terraced house, so I was conscious of how loud I was singing. I think the pitch issues would go if I could sing louder and fuller.

The drum thing was intentional. It's similar to the original. I quite like that bit. When I played it someone else they thought i'd done it by mistake or something. I thought it sounded quite good and in place!! Maybe it's just me! :-)

I liked the double tracked vocals - in fact it's triple. I originally sung it twice at the same pitch for the chorus, and then panned it hard left and right. I then decided to sing it an octave lower, and I stuck this in the middle. It gave a really full chorusy effect that seemed to work really well.

The original is a little bit faster and dancier, but other than that it's quite similar.
