sharing mp3s

To put an mp3 recording on your computer where somebody could find it using Limewire or Morpheus or some other program what do you have to do? Do you have to put it a web page of some sort?

I've looked for an mp3 that I've created on my home computer from my station at work and I can't locate it.

When you use a program like Morpheus or Grokster you have an options section on the toolbar where you can choose what, where and how many folders you want to share. The default shared folder for morpheus is in c:\programs\morpheus\mysharedfolder\.

To find the file on your computer that you lost, left click the start button and choose find. Search on your c drive for *.mp3 and that will find all the mp3's. I hope that helps.

I've never had much luck trying to find files from friends on those p2p networks. With Napster you only had access to the files of people who were randomly assigned to the same server. There were programs that let you pick a specific server so you could meet up online.

Morpheus is using that Gnutella network now and they work by chaining different computers together. Your search can only go through a certain number of computers before timing out. There may be a way to connect to a specific computer (I dont know) but otherwise it is going to be pretty random.

I think I've got all my mp3 files set up so they're shared. The program shows when something is being uploaded to somewhere else so it must be just like Tex says. I just may not be able to find it from somewhere else.

Napster kept the shared files on their own servers. That's the big difference and why they were so easily sued.

The gnutella programs, including Limewire, let clients share the files that are on your own computer. They basically work like a clearing house. You get to choose what files you want to share with others on the network and that's a good thing because you don't want to give random access to all your files to anyone. Most of them come with irritating ads and some come with spyware that keeps track of your internet activity. Limewire wants you to pay so you can be ad free, ya right. You also have the peer-to-peer programs like IRC that let's you trade files from individuals. There is still the old way of doing it too if you still have a modem, you can call your friends computer directly, share files and not be on the internet. Windows hyperterminal and ah yes, Qmodem hehe.

Bob, most Instant Messaging programs allow file transfers in much the same way. If you set up your home comp to allow a specific user to access certain files then you could access them from work with a different account. I know AOL Messenger will work this way but sometimes they can be finicky about firewalls at work.

ICQ is great for this. I co-write material with a few friends, and we send tracks back and forth (as huge-ass .wav's). It's similar to AOL IM - it's been around forever.
