an ebow is a hand held battery powered electronic device which stimulates vibrations in a guitar string without having to pick or pluck the string,so you have almost no attack and unlimited sustain. Check out old Bebop Deluxe records to hear Bill Nelson wailing away on ebow guitar!
p.s. I once heard about, but did not hear, a project where some pianist rigged up an array of multiple ebow on a grand piano and rigged the keys to not strike the strings---just to lift the pads and let the ebow vibrate the strings. I bet he got some cool sounds out of that!

David Bowie's "Hereoes" features one. It's the sustaining feedback sound.

I have one...they are cool but I'm not good at it yet.

Check out B. Sabbath's songs in the Mp3 clinic. He uses one a lot.

I heard Dave Navarro used the ebow on some songs on the RHCP album One Hot Minute.

The high pitched guitar on U2's With or Without You is an Ebow.

The Ebow is used by Phil Keagy alot. Ive used a piano hammer to play bass with for a diferent kind of attack. but Ive found that I would get too little of a signal using my Ebow with my bass.
