Recommend power supply/surge protector...

Hey guys -

The power around my home has been going out more often then I'd like, plus I've found that the wiring in my house is not all that wonderful... so I've begun wondering about getting some sort of power supply/surge protection unit to plug my computer, synth, etc into. I'm not sure what I need though. I know I'd like it to be silent or as close to silent as possible during normal use (not counting when the power does go out), and be able to offer me "at least" 2-3 minutes to save my work and safely shut down if there's a power problem. I do already have a basic "surge protection strip" that I plug into, but it's not that great. I'd say I would need at least 3 or more battery-supported outlets. Power conditioning would be a plus, though I don't know if these do that kind of thing. Oh and my computer's Antec power supply draws up to 400W, the monitor is a 19" Viewsonic PF795 flat-CRT (on the back it says "AC 100-240V~"), and the keyboard is a Yamaha Motif 8 (on the back it says 20W).

I know of the APC brand, but not familiar with others, and certainly not which model to pick for home studio use. My budget is rather meager as well

One of the things that Yamaha doesn't advertise when they push their DAW 2816/4416 is that a UPS is a necessity to protect the gear.

Since I bought a 2816, I also bought a Tripp-Lite UPS unit which will keep my recorder running for eleven minutes if the power should fail and it does fail around here frequently. I only need 20 seconds to properly shut-down the 2816.

I didn't check around much on this item as it is around 77 pezzutos as I remember. You can get longer coverage if you want to pay more. The unit also will do the same for your PC, etc.

It has room to plug in more than one item. I leave the unit on and the batteries stay charged. This unit will also check your wiring when you turn it on to see if your power supply is safe.

I'll second the Tripp-Lite advice. I have a 500VAC model and it is silent. I also have an APC and it's a little noisy (hums). Plus the APC doesn't seem to "clamp" as fast so when (its input) power dies there is a noticeable dip in the power before the battery kicks in while with the Tripp-Lite, you'd never know the power died other than the audible alarm on the unit telling you it did.
