Angry If you are buying monitors, then read this...

Little story...

I just got my new monitors last week, - Yamaha MSP5's. I had checked out the M-Audio Studiophile SP-5b's and JBL 25's. In the end I decided on the Yamaha's because they sounded good, the footprint was small and they had grillls and protectors covering the woofer and tweeter, -you see my studio is a computer table in the family room, along side the Lego, Playmobile and Starwars action figures etc, that entertain my 3 little boys *battling the universe every day* ( about an hour TV per day, -PBS, - I'm a bastard!).

Anyway, I haven't mixed anything with the Yamaha's yet, but I listened to some of my own tunes, some off HR ( sorry for not posting feedback, - apologies to B. Sabbath) and some reference CD's.
...... Okay, Ok ,so I'll cut to the chase....

So today I came home from work to find that my beloved 2 year old had found that his finger was small enough to poke through the tweeter protector an deform that shiney little cone , which he did, and nice job too. Looks like someone stuffed a piece of aluminum foil in there !
I think it still sounds OK to my novice ears..., but I'll never know!

..so consider where you plan on using your new monitors...

Finally,...any suggestions on what I should do?

... Yea, I agree NO PBS for a week, ...oh! .. and the speaker...

did you ask who did it?

From what I understand, a punched in tweeter dome won't make much of a difference. As long as they didn't tear it or punch in your cone, I think you're ok. In my house, an hour of PBS everyday would be the punishment! One hour of McNeil/Lehrer!!!!

JR#97,

...so the dome covers the tweeter cone? If a crushed dome doesn't affect the sound then, I'm wondering, whats the purpose of the dome? Hmmm...

...and an hour of McNeil/Lehrer, ... that might do it...

Thanks,

Might be wrong but it seems like I read somewhere the dome is just a dust (and other trash) protector. Keeps stuff (and fingers) from getting to the bottom of the tweeter. The last one I had that got punched in (cheap speakers though) I made a small hole in the center, bent the end of a paper clip, inserted it and pulled the dent out. If yours is all crunched up there's probably nothing you can do. I doubt you'll notice any difference in the sound. Just makes your pride and joy monitors look like they came off the WalMart sale shelf.

Question tape?

Have you tried taking a piece of Scotch tape, pressing it genlty on the crushed dome, and then pulling the structure back out into its original (or similar) form?

mcmd,

Now take the rest of that duct tape and bind your 2 yr olds fingers together............one hand at a time.............then put his hands behind his back and bind them together. Leave it like that for a day or two.

I don't know that it will stop similar incidents occuring but hell, you gotta have revenge

Wink No problem, and SP-5B feelings..?

Glad to have been of help!

I actually found this forum from a link at iZotope (reading up on the Ozone manual), because I purchased an AT3035 and wanted to read peoples opinions on it. Looks like a mix of reviews, but I can't say that I'm dissatisfied with it. I saw your post and remembered the trick from a past incident of similar disaster (baby nephew and $800 Cerwin Vega stereo speakers)!

I'm looking at getting the Studiophile SP-5B's, & later adding the SP-8S Subwoofer if necessary. Anybody have any feelings towards these? My budget for monitors is no more than $400 for a pair, so be gentle! ;-) The sub would obviously come at a later date.

Thanks in advance...

The first word my son learned 20 years ago was "NO". It didn't take him long to learn it after having his hands slapped and on occasion his bottomside addressed.

Glad you got your monitor tweeter fixed. The wonder tool strikes again.

Well, if you can’t hear a difference then you need your ears examined.

Seriously though, that "shiny little cone" is actually the radiating surface of the tweeter. Some are made of textile or aluminum, but the MSP5 has a titanium dome. And you’re probably lucky it’s titanium, because it’s a very springy metal and tends to return to its original shape. I’ve never tried to pop out a titanium dome, but I can tell you aluminum domes don’t fair so well. Glad the fix worked for you.

Titanium is also very brittle, so it doesn’t tend to kink. It usually either bends and returns or it just breaks. But maybe foil this thin acts differently? Do you still see any wrinkles in the dome after popping it out mcmd?

Don't want to labor this post past its expiration date...

Barefoot: thanks for the info. the dome looks perfect, and believe me it took a beatin' and looked like hell.

Footnote:

My home if full of A/V equipment, speakers in most every room, multisource this 'n that, guitars (3) on the walls and on stands, boogie amp and signal processors just sitting by the computer in the family room, -no basement or *studio* to call my own, but you know my three little boys (5,4 2) have been respectful over the years (save this recent experience), and much as I want to prevent accidents, I also want them to know that they can touch, play and hopefully enjoy music the way I have.....last thing a kid needs to hear is NO!

....I may yet again eat my words

Thanks to all.

If you continue using that titanium dome, the sub-atomic anti-matter space time continuum will warp the ultra-high gravitational frequencies to the point of evaporating every living creature on earth. Don’t you even care??? Oh the humanity!!!
