How did they do that?
I am new at recording. I write and play songs with my acoustic only and have recently discovered Bruce Springsteen's "Ghost of Tom Joad" and that is the sound I want. There is so much 'space' in the vocals, as if he is singing in a large empty room. Can anyone offer advice on how to achieve that presence?
Thanks in advance Michael |

Either a reverb unit or distant micing in a very live sounding room.

I get that sound using the Cathedral effect setting on my Mackie mixer. Then adjust it with the effects drive knob.

Spinster...
Thanks for that link...I printed several of those articles and I'm reading them this weekend...that link should be posted on every Newbie reply! Thanks again to all who replied. I think Im going to swich to a larger room and invest in a better mic, perhaps a Rhode NT1 or Shure KSM-27... |

No need for a larger room. Sing as dry as you can in a closed space, add some quality reverb (hall, large room, etc) settings and you should be there.
