Opinions on a stand-alone sampler?

Hi Folks,
..I was hoping one of you gear-heads could give me an opinion on a stand-alone sampler. I would rather have something that doesnt require the computer if at all possible. Im a knob tweaker, and I would prefer something that can do the job on its own. Expandability is important. I dont know much about what is available, and any info or leads would be much appreciated. I would like to use it for drums, etc. I have explored a few of the sound modules, etc. Any opinions?

Hey there...... caretaker: Yup, I think youre right regarding the key/module forum. My nephew just got a pretty decent Mapex kit, and Ive been trying to finagle a way to borrow that sum-bitch from him...... ......might be a chore though. It would be fun to mess with.
beathoven: Lots of everything I guess.... From hardrock to easy jazz....... maybe even a little hip hop. To start off, I need better drum sounds. Im using a DR770, and it has limitations. I would like to be able to use all of the stuff avail. on CD's as well as sample my own things. thanks

I use a BOSS SP202 Sampler with 32mb smartmedia card.
I use it for git and horn riff inclusions on a few of my jammies
and sometimes voc samples from var "golden oldie" lp's.
It comes in handy every now and then but don't use it that much anymore!

I used to use an SP202, but I couldn't work with its limitations. Upgraded to an Akai S-5000 and it was a world of difference. Very easy to use, nice informative user interface, you can add SIMMS, SCSI hard drives, cd drives, and Zip drives (which is what I used) to load samples. The Zip option was great because I could make my samples on my computer, and then stick them in the Akai.

MisterQue and Elevate:
Do these samplers have built in sequencers? How are they for drum programing? Do they program like a drum machine? Please excuse the lame questions..... just curious.

Pretty sure the s5000 and sp202 don't have built in sequencers. I have an Akai S2000 which definitely doesn't. I use it for drums. It's not like programming a drum machine. You have to have a stand alone sequencer to "play" the sampler. Or you can plug a midi keyboard into the sampler and use that, but you need a sequencer really. Programming the sequencer is similar to programming a drum machine. The S2000, BTW, is great for drums, sound quality-wise. Having added an expansion card with 8 individual outs it now does service as a top quality drum machine.
