breathing sounds

is there a faster way to remove breathing sounds between verses? The gasp for air you hear right before you say a line. Right now I cut them out manually, but if theirs a faster way, then I'm up for it.

Not that I know of. It's a manual operation as far as I know, doing any kind of envelope work or cut on a track.

Alternately you can take my wholewheat approach, and just leave 'em in. Natchl.

A gate might work if you tweak it correctly. This takes for granted that the gasps are not really really loud. I gate just about everything.

Either a gate, or a remove silence feature. You can set it much like a gate. Anything below a certain DB level gets shunted to -90DB. Of course, I am not sure if CEP has a remove silence feature (have to look later) but I know that Sonar does. So there should be a similar tool in CEP

What's the technical term for that? Downward expansion?

The simple ugly answer is improve your microphone technique. Mostly de-essers, gates, editing effects, EQ, and the rest of the plethora of electronic hooey will not sound as good as a singer who doesn't pop his plosives. Simple but difficult answer- don't beathe audibly. If you can hear yourself breathe, so can the mic.
If it's cardioid, be off axis when you breathe. Find the phrasing pauses in the music to take more small breaths and control the sound you make. It's weird that when these issues come up, almost everyone on this board will start suggesting their cool electronic solutions to bad noises, when the obvious answer is not to make any!-Richie

Yup, Richie's right. But what if you actually have those sounds on your tracks already?
