Monitor selection

Im looking at getting a set of monitors on a budget of $1200-$1500 ($600-$750 US) and ive got a few quotes which are:
Behringer Truth @ $1199
DynAudio BM5 plus Alesis RA150 @ $1650
Tannoy Reveal Actives @ $1500
EMES Pink @ $1650
Event PS5 at $1499
But i'd also like to look at getting a pair of Yorkville YSM1Ps which i think are about $1200
Just woundering if you could give me your thoughts before i listen to them. Im kind of hoping the yorkvilles because of their price and of what ive heard about them.

G'day OZ,

I have a pair of the Yorkvilles YSM-1P's.....they cost $740 Cdn + Tax here in Toronto....

YEP, for the price they are VERY good......I compared them with all the others in their price range (ie: the Behringer Truth, M-Audio Studiophile 8B, Roland DS, Yamaha 5P, Tannoys, etc....and I think they are definitely the best of the bunch...

They have a very FLAT response, the mid-range imaging is good and the bass/bottom end is clear n crisp (not boomy)....

I listen to em a lot....CD's Mp3's, etc..as well as for my mixes....and I like what I hear....they reproduce an "un-coloured" accurate sound......

In MHO.....they are definitely the winners in the $500 category.

IF you want to spend a bit more - I also recommend the Event 20/20 BAS....

I spent hours over the past 2-3 months before I purchased the YSM-1P's listening to them, side by side, with even the expensive monitors like the Dynaudio's, Mackies, etc.......and I was quite surprised how good they performed

So I bought em :-)

From the ones on your list that I heard, I liked the Truths and the Events PS5 best. But include the M Audio Studiophiles SP-8B as well (should be around $500-550 US) which have both the mid clarity of the Events and the low-end of the Behringers. And ofcourse, most people are raving about the Yorkvilles and the Tannoy Reveal ACTIVES. I've only heard the passives, and I liked their highs and mids, but the low-end wasn't sufficient (eventhough I do rock/funk/metal/surf, and no r&b/hip-hop where more bass is needed).

My future in monitor setups will probably be something like:
In 2 months (right now I only mix on cans!):
-Tannoy Reveal Actives, Event PS-6 or Studiophiles SP-8B

In 3-5 years:
-Mackie HR824

In 10-15 years:
-Meyer HD-1

In 30 years:
some Westlake stuff...

C9-2001

I waited for almost 3 months in order to listen to the *Behringer Truths* (coz they were out of stock in North America for quite a while)....and when I did finally get to test 'em, alongside the other monitors mentioned above......I was not particulary impressed....

OK, they weren't terrible considering the price-range....BUT, they also certainly didn't offer a FLAT response as so widely claimed....the BASS end was definitely enhanced....and the highs too (coloured) & bright...

also they became rather "harsh" when the VOL was cranked up!

I had thought that they were going to be a much better product from all the hyped up reviews & info I'd previously read on the net.

After testing a ton of different monitors over a 3-4 month period....I reckon these are the best 4 models....

Under $500 - The Yorkville YSM-1P

$800 Range - Event 20/20 BAS

$1500 Mackie 824's

$2500+ Dynaudio BM6A

of course speakers are very *subjective*.....so don't take MY word for it :-)

Yamaha NS10s, even though they have been discontinued, the pros are still aquireing them, and using them.

If I didnt have them I suppose that I would use the Reveals.

What does anybody have to say about the Genelec 1029 or 1031? Which of them is better?

those are the only ones you should probably consider.

Alonso, although the Genelec 1031 are decent monitors, they AREN'T decent for their asked price. Because half of the world likes to pay overpriced stuff so they have 'status', the price of Genelec is kept high... I believe you'll need to fork up $2500-3000 for a pair of 1031a's, while the Mackie HR824 sound BETTER for just $1100 a pair (@ bhp-photo). The Mackies have a better midrange.
The Genelecs (almost all Genelecs) have tight lows, a tad scooped mids and forward highs, the highs of the Dynaudio's (BM6A, BM15A) are much smoother and easier on the ear. The Behringer Truths are more modelled after Genelecs, while the Tannoy Reveals share more with the Dynaudio's (although lacking their low-end...)
I still need to hear the SP-8B's, but from what I've gathered so far, they might be the best of both worlds. BTW, I heard some large retailer (Musician's Friend) is now selling the SP-8B's for just $299,99!!!! That's the same price as their smaller brothers (SP-5B)...

Speed..first of all. way to go Avatar!!!!!! I was planning on investing about $900 on monitors, but if the options are better, I would stretch the limit to $1300. From all the above mentioned monitors, do you think the Mackies stand out? Are they worth their price?

Thanx.
Yes, the Mackies are mos def worth their price. Be sure to check them at I believe bhp-photo or something... They have 'em for $1098 per pair! In Europe those mutherfuckers cost $2100!!!
Anyway, if you're not going with the Mackies, also check Dynaudio's BM15's, KRK V8's, A.D.A.M.'s P11A's... (all around $1000-1300 per pair)
Here are some EUROPEAN links with cheap gear:
www.thomann.de
www.musicstorekoeln.de
www.musiciansgear.com

The Mackies are the kind of monitor that you'll use for at least 10-15 years... then start thinking about Meyer HD-1's... ($3600 a pair)

Its B&H photo. On 34th and 9th ave here in NYC. They have an impressively thorough pro audio depmnt for a camera store. Unlike every other store in the city, sam ash, mannys, guitar center, etc they have a mic room with several dozen mics set up at all times for your listening pleasure. The only problem with B&H is their return policy which is a short 7 days for money back. $1100 a pair for the mackies is pretty good. Most places here theyre $1350.

I couldn't resist either... I already got mine... but the freq. responces for each speaker were different... (??? ???)there was a 5dB peak in the 3-6K range on the Clio chart (which they provide with each speaker) and it was noticeable when listening... I must say, they did sound good to me... but I have literally no reference point whatsoever to go by, since this is my first monitor purchase... but since they weren't a "matched" pair, I sent em back... hopefully I'll get the replacements soon..

I must say though,... for 300 bucks.. nothing else comes close.. if a "tight budget" is an issue and you're in the market for monitors, I can't imagine passing this price up... which is why I didn't...

Got my sp-8bs yesterday. So far, from listening to them on the floor and on two uneven surfaces, they sound very good. Plenty of bass but very tight. Highs are crisp and clean. For $300 ..... I'm satisfied. Have to build some shelves to put them on though so's I can get them at the right level.
