Kapn' Kirk is on a distinguished road
suggestions in selecting sourround monitors...

I am in the midst of researching speakers for use in mixing 5.1 and beyond, and would love any input from those who have a favorite they can recommend.

My budget isn't huge, under $5k for the whole sha-bang. So far I really like the new mackies hr824's.

Thanks for any suggestions,
Kirk

Sweet!...

Now all I need is 3 more LSR25P's and a sub

Hey Bruce, have you seen/heard any 5.1 setups using the LSR25s? Did they use the LSR12P as a sub or something else?

Mix mag did a write-up on the whole surround mix thing -- the JBL 25s were mentioned numerous times -- I'll post if I come across it again... (or try the on-line archive at Mix's site......)

How do you master a 5.1 Mix? Do the surround sound modules in ProTools and Logic actually give you a DTS encoded track or do you still need a pricey encoder?

I hear Nuendo gives you a built-in encoder, but most other software make you buy one - seen prices of around $600 up for software encoders, that might help explain why Nuendo is so much more expensive than most. I'm not sure if the Nuendo encoder does DTS, or just AC-3, or both... Steve

Yuck.

DTS sends 6 channels using only about an equivalent data rate of 2 channel CD audio. In fact, it’s usually about ½ the data rate of a CD because most DVD titles use the lower data rate DTS. AC-3 is similar. So that’s a 6:1 compression ratio.

Give me DVD-Audio or give me death!

Of course I can’t afford a 5.1 DVD-A setup yet. But, I’m not going 5.1 until I can afford it.
