What Mics?

Hi would somebody mind taking the time and writing down the uses for my mics. now I realize that I have less than desired mics but poverty doesent allow me many luxeries,
anyway, I would like to know the different and best uses for each of mics, here is the list, I have SM57, MXL V63M, MXL V67
Octavia MC012, Beta 52, AKG C3000B,
well thats it, I know that these arent so great but they are all I have, and would like to know all there uses, from vocals, to instruments, to live recording such as symphonic, and ensembles,
and which are best for what specific drum, ie. best highhat mic, ect ect,

Well, I'm not an expert... but to start off your list:

SM57 - versatile mic; guitar amps, snare drums, some vocals
Beta 52 - kick drum mic; useable for guitar amps
Oktava MC/MK012 - small diaphram cardioid/omni condenser, good for detailed recording, like acoustic guitar, piano, flute, etc.

v67 - good vocal mic, might make a decent kick mic with proper wind screen.

v63 - second vocal mic, door stop.

AKG c3000 - good second mic (over the shoulder) to use for stereo micing with mc012 on accoustic guitar.

As far as all the other stuff you mentioned; horns, ensembles, piano, etc. . . . the mc012 is the best all-purpose mic you have, and should be able to capture most anything pretty damn well. I might recommend a second one, as well as a pair of the behringer ecm8000 omnis and you should be able to handle whatever gets thrown at you.

I've seen a lot of people talking SM-57 for vocals. If you hold it close to your mouth you can play off the proximity effect for bass boost. Tried it - didn't work for me. Issues with 'plosives (spit and breath). I suppose there's a way to edit it out (or if the mix is loud, nobody will know or care anyway). Anyway, I switched to the SM-58 (identical capsule, just adds the built-in windscreen) and have been mucho happier! Now if I can just stay on key...

A screen, or is there some electronics you're talking about? I would think a screen would defeat the point of using the '57, which is that you can get your mouth right up to the capsule and make use of the proximity bass boost. Add a screen in front of the '57 and you've basically got a '58. Am I missing something?

The 58 still isn't a very effective pop filter. It's still plosive as all heck. I would just get a good screen . . . a really good one, and move it in real close if you still want proximity effect.

Treat the SM57 more like a high quality mic and it will sound more like one.

Get or make a pop filter (mesh hoop screen type) and give a little distance between the singer and the mic. With a decent micpreamp like the AudioBuddy you may be quite surprised at what a 57 can sound like when it is not inserted in someones face.

A pop filter does not interfere with proximity effect unless you're literally swallowing the mic for effect. I really like the Sabrasom pop filter- check the sound room for pictures. It's a little pricey $50.00 but durable and versatile, but it's not a clip-on, it really wants its own stand.-Richie
