Just got the Philips CDR 765 and I'm a little confused by something the manual says:
"It is not possible to make a digital copy from a digital copy." They is under the Serial Copy Management System section for copyright adherence.

What constitutes a "digital copy" in this context?
How does this limit me in making copies of my own CD's burned from my FD-8?
Also, if uses a Philips with an 8-track recorder, do you usually burn your original on a CD-R or a CD-RW?

Good question...one of the problems with these standalone units is they will sometimes think an original CD like you made yourself is actually an illegal copy and refuse to copy it digitally, in which case you have to copy it from the analog inputs. If it does prevent you, we'd love to hear about it!

Baines & Dragon...

I also have a Philips 765 and have tested the following scenario to better understand the meaning of this. I copied a regular CD from my Yamaha player to the Philips using the digital audio out(lightpipe). I then took the back-up copy out of the Philips and tried to repeat the process and make a copy from the copy and it wouldn't let me. The Philips must write a special code to prevent this from happening.

What I also found is that you can make a copy of the back-up using a computer based system. I have a Yamaha CDR400 burner in my computer and it lets me make a copy of the back-up using digital audio extraction. It treats the copy as an original.

I do have a lot of hardware (computer and standalone CD recorder) so that does make it easier. I have found the Philips 765 to do a great job. I use it as a mixdown deck from my two Vestax HDR-6 machines.

I have been looking into purchasing a CD burner for a while now. I'm waiting for the Alesis MasterLink to come out. As I understand it, some CD burners such as certain "consumer" Philips models recognize SCMS code to prohibit multiple recordings of copyrighted material, i.e. commercial CDs. Others, such as Fostex and Tascam can be set to ignore SCMS as well as encode SCMS onto CDRs. As for recording onto CR-RW, I understand that most standard CD players will not play a CR-RW.
