there were articles on the Californication album in SOS(check www.sospubs.co.uk), so maybe also about BSSM, I don't know. I don't know much, but I'm pretty sure frusciante just uses his strat with his Marshall. the rest you gotta ask Rick Rubin

there is?
I saw it on "Ultimate Albums"
any more info on that video tex?
I don't know about mics or whatever...they recorded it in that big mansion though...the drums were in a huge wood floor living room....got that big natural reverb sound...
most of frusciantes stuff was done in 1 take...with strat/marshall as mentioned...
the percussion stuff on "breaking the girl" was done with tons of garbage and pot and pans and stuff...
I've seen clips of anthony recording vocals in the middle of that big ass room too...but, I don't know...maybe that was just rehearsal.
I believe a lot of the 'magic' of that album was truely the enviroment...

I don't really know much about the video. I had mentioned Rubin to a friend of mine and he told me about the video. I've been meaning to get it from him so I'll see what it's called and let you know.

Next time George Clinton comes to town. Go to his show and corner him in the can. Thats how I met him. He ought to know he produced the thing.

That's one ofthe greatest Kick sounds there is, and it's a damned SM57 on a 20" Kick drum.
I have Funky Monks. It's pretty good....it's not "about" them recording the record, but you see them doing it. It's just a general film done while they recorded BSSM.

I'm liking "By The Way". Finally hearing Flea slap & pop them strings again is good for the soul Seems like this is the first real funky thing they've done for a while. And the production on that part (not the verse) is really kinda interesting (the production choices, not the mastering).

yeah, I also like the middle part, some great interaction with flea and Frusciante. The overall melody and the beginning part too is a bit too mellow to my felling. When you compare it to some of their early stuff, it's maybe a little bit too 'poppy' for me, it lacks that little edge.

Yesterday I listened to the new album and in my opinion it doesn't cut it. Never that: "hey, this is cool" feeling. I may give it another chance but I don't think it comes close to Californication.

Didn't hear it the entire album yet, I am quiet curious though.
BSSM stays their peak in my opinion.

If I remember correctly I read that BSSM was recorded in a big house (I guess you could call it a mansion) with each of the band members given their own room, and the tracks were cut live that way.
Radiohead's Ok Computer and Bowie's recent Heathen were also recorded in large houses. Seems like a cool idea.
BSSM is one of my all time favorite sounding albums. Any info on where to find a copy of the "making of" would be cool.

I talked to my friend about the video and he thinks it is just called the "Making of BSSM". It came out in 92 and it may be hard to find. Check EBay or any places that carry used movies.

Man, yesterday I heared the entire 'By The Way' album for the first time.
I'm really, really disapointed Maybe I'll adjust my point of view after I listen again for a couple of times.
I really expected back some great funkrock kinda things like on the BSSM, but it has become a very melodic poppy album. Maybe a great poppy album, but I ain't in the mood for poppy albums, I really wanted some pumpin' fitness funkpunkrock, or how do you call their early work
Not one single time while listening to By The Way I thought 'Yeah Man, this is it!!'

seems like a lot of good bands are turning pop....to a certain extent....i feel that bssm was definately rhcp greatest album and shows just how great they can play and was a step away from their other albums...when californication came out, i figured it was their way of showing all those "pop" bands just how much better rhcp can do that style. Now this new album, im getting it today but it better have some funk or something besides the "popular" i call $hitty music otherwise they're gonna lose the pedestal i put them on.
