pre amp problem

i have this problem with my art tube mp studio preamp. i can't seem to get the vocals boosted to a decent level without the pre adding extra noise. i recorded a track just what the mic off and the pre on and when i pressed the 20db gain there was tremendous noise. even without the gain there is noise when i either increase the in or out put volume. i have double sided quarter inch gold shielded cables from radio shack, is that the problem, the settings?, or is it the pre?

It could also be because of low output from your mic.
What are you using?

ART studio Preamp

Is this problem with the ART studio preamp common? I'm trying to decide the best way to input this Rode NT1 I just got into my Hoontech DSP Value soundcard I just got and was considering the ART but will reconsider if this is a major flaw.

have u checked the volume controls of your sondcard?
it sounds like you may have the preamp turned up very high and the soundcard input very low.

I have an NT1 and a little behringer mixer going into a sblive platinum and i have basically no noise.

hmm

are you going into a computer?
tahts what im doing, with the studio mp, and i had that same problem
but then i realized i had it pluged into the mic in, and that was the problem. You want to go into the line in. And turn your monitor off, that helps. Bah, i dunno, other than that might be the pre, i find now that its in the line in, its super quiet.

The street date on the Studio Projects tube pre is now the week of the 21st, with a retail price of $199.00, and an estimated street value of $170.00 , Thats less than the Art and It is likely to be a vast improvement.
