Question MIDI Controller

What exactly is a MIDI Controller? I hear the term everywhere. I know this is a very general question, but this is a new language to me.

Thanks,
Anthony

MIDI controllers can be as simple as a keyboard that sends MIDI messages to a synth module or sample/soundfont chip on a soundcard. All the way up to complex controllers that allow you to access and manipulate MIDI messages in real time, like say a lighting controller.

Midi controler

I use Fruity Loops(sequencing software) Midi controler to handle the starting, stopping and tempo of my hardware and software. This keeps everythings tempo the same and on beat.

You can also assign software midi instruments in programs like cakewalk and pro-tools to midi controlers such as keyboards to play the instruments on your keyboard instead of using the click interface.
