Vanessa Carlton - A Thousand Miles

I posted this in the mic forum, but when I think about it, it should be here.

So my comment is....

Is it just me, or are you NOT supposed to hear the hammers moving in the piano, (or whatever that dull sound is before every piano key is hit) in the beginning of the song?

It's probably the sustain pedal...

That cd is utter garbage....... Recording is pretty good, but songwriting and performance, is junk!

I agree whole-heartedly...drop the lyrics, the ridiculous, half assed attempt at a melody and singing and you might have the remains of a promising song... her voice is incredibly nerve racking as she tries to sing with heartfelt "passion"

Incredibly unbelievable and easily forgotten.

Yeah..
I just don't know what the big thing is.. I mean these girlls, like Vanessa Carlton and (sorry MRQ and Eyes Like Fire) Alecia Keys, Play piano at a grade 3 level, and the media sets them up like they are these amazing genius musical prodigies.

I don't know....I just don't know

...and there's all these chick singers, like vanessa carlton, michelle branche, and a few others I can't think of right off hand, that all sound the same! I ALMOST can't tell the difference.

There's been very few female singers since Joplin died that have any personality at all. Since then, most female albums have had the vocals done by the same ghost singer. Its really all the same person...well, one for country and one for pop.

Sorry guys - I don't agree. I think she's a good songwriter, and I'm not even into that kind of music. Actually my reaction was allmost opposite to yours. "Finally someone with a style of her own." Maybe the lyrics could use some work, but frankly to me that's secondary - probably because english is not my native language so they don't hit me as hard...
I even like her voice and way of singing - go figure...

I like Vanessa Carlton's voice, as well - and I enjoy the song. I just have to ignore the lyrics.

The funny thing is, it doesn't seem like that piano part is recorded live. It just sounds like a bunch of loops strung together. Anybody else notice that?

Can't stand Michelle Branch.

kind of?

yeah, there are some wierd spots in that song where it seems like the did a bad job of editing the verses and bridges together.

Whenever that song comes on I zone in on the drum parts actually. Computer or human or both - that hi-hat is getting a nice workout

Just got the album.

Listen to "Wanted". This girl's got a lot more depth than I originally thought. Tori Amos-ish with slightly less piano ability, a strong sense of melody, and FAR less pretense.

Also a very well-produced record, IMO.

Some bits and pieces of songs also reminds me of Alanis Morisette.
The girl absolutely got talent, given some time she could be great.
