Bare Bones Barefoot
Here's my latest - tentatively named I.L.T.S.
http://www.nowhereradio.com/barefoot/singles It's still rather bare boned and I need to flesh it out with a bit more "melody". But I think this skeleton has a one phat phucking groove! Like it or not, my music seems to be leaning on the trancy side. My wife describes it as "groovy trance". I'd rather think of it as "trancy breaks". In any case, I guess you have to go with what comes naturally. And as long as it has some edge and people get the GROOVE it's alright by me. barefoot |

Mr.QQ,Thanks man! It's always good to get recs from the bass players.
![]() Giganova,Multi-approval... Cool. Spread the word!Apparently someone didn't like it because they gave my thread a bad rating. Would be nice if they at least had the courtesy to state their objections. ![]() barefoot |

Hypnotic groove. I like the way the theme is stated for the first few minutes, then strayed from, then restated. I see what you mean by needing to work in melody a bit, but the groove is definitely there. Really put me in mind of movie theme music, this would work well at that imo.
One of the coolest things was the little triplet at the very end, like a signature. Nice groove! Mark |

I'm digging on the breaks. Nice stuff man.
I also like the choice of sounds. Now all you need is one wildcard melody to usher your songs into the halls of greatness.

![]() I dig that drum loop (0:17 to 3:00). I also liked the fill at 1:38 and 4:14. it sounds a little "off". (not in a bad way) WATYF P.S. I gave your thread 5 stars to cancel out whoever give it that bad rating. ![]() Last edited by WATYF; 06-21-2002 at 17:32.. |

I agree pretty much with everyont else here....movie them or even video game music....but also of course some good ol' ass shakin in the stobe lights of the night club sweating like a drunkin pig....oh sorry. My friend did that once....
I also agree it needs a solid melodic theme to match the strong rhythm you have going. Try the theme from the The Godfather and go from there. Keep it up!Last edited by SLuiCe; 06-21-2002 at 19:42.. |

definately some solid textures. I would for sure call it trance with its repetitive nature....but makes for a really nice groove...agreed.

Cool groove going. I rather like the bare bones approach. I am not a big fan of this style. I would just say dont overcrowd it, some of the sparsness really works for me.

Okay, I haven't read any of the other comments yet.
Let's see... musical bubbles, dark spacey bassy, throbbing beats... yup, this one needs a dancefloor. It's fun putting loops together, isn't it? ![]() A respectable atmospheric little throbber, sir, for sure. Good work. What software did you use to put it together with? But I think it's cheating boosting the volume like that around 4.00. You'll shred someone's speakers with that trick. ![]() |

phat phucking groove! yes indeed
It is trancy because it has that distinct hum to it but it makes the beat really good. If you put a melody over this then that will change but the beat is ace! look farward to the update. You could put loads onto this...cool Cooper |

Not bad at all. I liked the break about 4 minutes into the tune. Very slick.

What software/gear did you use? |

great job!
either add a melodic line or add a singer with splashes of something undergirding the singer. about the 5 minute mark the lack of a melody started to get really noticeable, then at 5:30 or so, you dropped the beat and made things interesting again. i liked the way you brought in the oscillating kalimba sound at 6:30. in all seriousness, you are one mitsubishi eclipse commercial away from stardom ala Dirty Vegas. |

mkg, CJ, WATYF, SLuiCe, Beathoven, badgas, mixmkr, King Elvis, Cooper,
Thanks all for the compliments and kind feedback. ![]() Yeah, I definitely had the dance floor in mind with this one. I've had this mix on my plate for a few months and couldn't seem to find the icing on the cake. Well, I guess posting it was the right thing to do because the flood gates opened and I came up with a bunch of extra material and put it all together just over the weekend. I added a lot, but I think the mix still retains it's open rhythmic "pushing forward" feel. I haven't had the chance to uploaded the new version yet. It takes my modem forever. I should have it up there by tonight and I'll let you all know and asks for your criticism again. dobro, VirtualSamana, Giganova, Thanks also for the compliments. Sorry, I must have been spacing in a mix when I didn't post my equipment list. Here's what I used on this mix. Software: Acid Pro 3.0, Sound Forge 5.0, Prosoniq Time Factory, Waves Native Gold, Timeworks 6022 Delay & 4080L Reverb, Stomper. Hardware: Korg MS2000R, Kaysound MK-4902 controller, Yamaha DX21, Midisport 1x1, Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, Modified NAD Amp, Barefoot Sound monitors. Media: Various drum hit libraries and a few heavily processed samples. crosstudio, " you are one mitsubishi eclipse commercial away from stardom" Haaa! I promise you won't hear this one in a car commercial until AFTER the CD is actually released! ![]() barefoot |

Barefoot, my man, really good to hear a relatively complete piece from you, much anticipated by me. Which reminds me, why the hell aren't you atleast PM'n me with updates??? I got like two dudes on my 'buddy' list and you're one of 'em....
Anyways, you got the groove bro, for sure. I've pretty much always been a bit sceptical about AcidPro, knew you were a big proponent, but now I just might have to check me a demo, impressive stuff. I must say that being a fairly avid trance follower (relative to this bbs anyways ) that this is my style. Can dance to it, but definitely has a listenability factor that most trance lacks, and hence falls by the wayside. You mentioned having made improvements upon this and I'm pretty interested to hear them. You should check out The Orb's "Pomme Fritz" EP and some of the older Northern Exposure Series from Sasha and john Digweed and check their sample (vocal) usage; they really meld wierd spoken word stuff into lush atmospheric jumbo that would absolutely fit perfect with this track, hell I don't think it really demands a melody persay, but some thickening for sure, specially if you're looking to induce trance, which is of course a goal of sorts, of course (hehe). Anyways man, really cool to see blatant progression artistically, and you are riding the same vibe that my "band-mates" and I are workin. And hey, if you hit a brick wall with this I'm only an ICQ away, melodic atmospheres are my forte, my deal. Keep movin........Laj |

Wow, 7 minutes long. This must be the extended dance remix. Anyway, I got a little tired of that first drum beat that goes until about 3:00... Maybe throw in a variation or two. I like the arpegiatted synth somewhere after two minutes. Around 4:15 this thing really kicks off, deep bass, new drum, line, this part rocks. I don;t really like the way the main drum line fades out from 5:00... you should try to find a little more of a transition there, or soemthing to replace it. In general, I think drum lines are better on fade ins than fade-outs, especially when everything else keeps going. Then it's back in around 6:00, cool, back to where we were. And the arpeggio makes a reappearance around 6:30, I like it, but it should be a little lower in the mix.
My major comment would be, man this is repetitive. But I don't know a lot about the genre, so I don't know whether that's a good thing or a bad thing. Overall, I liked the pulsing heavy bass and rockin drums parts best, those really rocked me. |

Laj, Thanks for your usual great input. The funny thing is that, barring a few exceptions, I don't like Trance - at least in it's present state. So in light of this, I put an ironic twist in I.L.T.S. Did you notice? I need to open up the attack on the compressor to make the kicks more obvious, but that very Trancy section from about 3:00 to 4:00 starts out with an 808 kick on the 1st beat then slowly builds to a straight thumping 4X4. And just when you think this is turning into a "Real Trance" tune the drums break, the bass cranks in, and some raucous groovin breakbeats smack you in the face and say "Got ya sucka! And here's a sum more for ya neon tie-dyed earthchild ass!! "
![]() The Orb and S&D I know well - though I need to pickup some S&D discs. I guess I'm torn a little as to whether I should go the "ambient overlay" route. Every time I try that I think it throws the tune way over into Psy-Trance territory, where I definitely don't want to be. Maybe my execution is just off. I'll PM you with the next updates so you can let me know if you think I'm heading in the right direction. Sam, Thanks man. Hey it's all valid, guitars or whatever. I haven't picked up my guitar in a while, but maybe I should for this tune. The last thing I was into before I took a hiatus from the guitar was trying to build these dreamy soundscapes with a sort of distant fury á la The Verve's "A Storm In Heaven" - an incredible recording by the way, and one you should definitely hear if you haven't already (one of the best rock albums of the 90's IMHO). Yeah, that kind of thing just might work here. Maybe it's time to blow the dust off of the case of my very fine, and completely underrated, Elite series Strat. Thanks for the idea!charger, Glad you were feeling the vibe. Believe it or not 7 minutes isn't considered "extended" for this genre. That's a relatively normal length song. Extended electronica mixes these days are often one LP side, or even one whole CD long. But yeah your right, it's a bit repetitive at this point because what I have so far is meant to be the rhythmic framework for further melodic elaboration. I'll try experimenting with some alternatives to that drum fade out. Thanks for the suggestion. ![]() barefoot |
