Talking Something new and old to sink your teeth into

Got some new postings for all you boys and girls to check out. I came across some old Maxell cassettes that I had recorded on the old Tascam 4 track and so I included a couple on here. Tell me what youse guys think.

Hello K/E

I checked out some snippet of your posted tunes. I dig on the diversity and quality of them all.

You've honed some nice chops and use them in a profound way.
Nice recordings.

Just keep posting and commenting on others efforts and that "newbie" thang disapears. After that, you're a marked man and run the risk of a personality leaking out.

Nice playing!

Theron.

Nice stuff King.......I've been telling my wife you weren't really dead.
I really like the fact that you do radically different styles from song to song. And the quality of your cassette masters is suprisingly good. Good playing too. I'm kinda strange so I like The Deep the best.

Thanks guys, I was kinda suprised at the quality of my 4 track recordings too. Now when I listen back to some of em I am kinda shocked at how clean they are. I used to have a Tascam Porta 7 now I use a VS-880EX. That being said, I still feel that my stuff isnt even HALF as good as the stuff I have heard on here!!!

I listened to "Doing 60 in the 80's" or something close.

Extremely good guitar playing. I believe I heard three separate lead parts, and I liked the stereo panning you did with them.

The only thing I might offer is to play with the EQ on what I'll call the "dominant" lead part. I thought it was a bit harsh in the mid frequencies. Perhaps if you cut some mids and boost a bit in the "high lows" it might sound a bit smoother. If it were me, I'd play around to see if I could improve that.

Isn't it nice that Michael Jackson isn't your son in law anymore?

All I can say is that you did "Sleepwalk" very nicely. It's a gorgeous tune and you played it with a good vibe. Thanks for sharing.

These were very good recordings for a 4-track.

And the guitar is tight.

On Doin' 60 I would have liked to hear a little more punch from the bass drum. It was sort of like an after thought.. kinda like, "oh.. whatdya know.. there's a bass drum in there.." but I'm a drummer, so you know where my biases lie...

"Sleepwalk" sounds so fresh and new, despite it being very old tune. This sounds so damn nostalgic, and makes me think of summers past. Good job for 4-track.

"This Time". I don't think I've heard this song before. Are these REALLY 4-track's because they sound pretty well mixed for 4-track stuff. I'm impressed. I haven't heard the original, but this sure sounds nice. The kick drum is a bit overpowering, but I guess you're not looking for mix critiques here, since these are your old recordings. You've chosen good sounds. When I listen to my first recordings, they sound god awful. I didn't know how to choose proper sounds. I hope I do nowadays. Anyways... What am I rambling about...? Good song you covered here.

"The Deep". Weird spooky stuff. I guess that's a guitar with LOTS of effects in the intro. I think you got a little carried away with your effects apparatuses Oh, in the middle part, the song starts to evolve. This sounds like an amoeba is evolving into some life being slowly. Just floating in some slimy goo, and sleeping while there's a thunderstorm above (eh?). I just hope that middle part would have taken over the song slowly, and morphed the song a little, but this is still interesting. Not to be listened that frequently, but a relaxing piece. I never can't get myself to slow down things like this on my recordings. I'm too hasty.

"Doin' 60 in the 80's". Now this sounds a bit like my older Zoom 505-II recordings, before I discovered Revalver. This sounds A LOT like them, really. Only you're playing better. I was horrible then, and I'm horrible now. I'm just skilled enough of an engineer to cover my tracks More cut & paste nowadays. Too much reverb on the drums, but I remember I got carried away with the effects back then also.

Thanks guys for all of the responses, but I need to do some clarification on the songs. Only "The Deep" and "Doin 60 in the 80's" were recorded on my old 4 track cassette machine. The other two, "Sleepwalk" and "This Time" were recorded on the very first VS-880. And, YES...I do want mixing tips!!

The very first? Are you a beta tester for Roland? I want something new.
The four tracks really did sound good. I know it's controversial but in certain aspects, I still like the sound of my Nakamichi cassette recorder better than my cd recorders when I make recordings of my LPs. 16bit/44.1k digital loses something, especially when recording delicate stuff--------stuff that's full of vocals or acoustic instruments. Yes there is that tape hiss but if you can ignore that ( I sometimes can) it is a truer recording of what the LP sounds like than my burners.
It doesn't apply to all music and, of course, 4-tracking is a different thing because of the pinging and cumulative noise and wow and flutter but there are some areas where analog is still pretty cool.

Hey Elvis (has left the building),

Thanks for posting some great songs with a lot of diversity. I've just listened to them ...

Doin' 60 In The 80's -- Okay, are you really playing the guitar, or is that a Proteus? The sound is very similar. Anyway, good recording. It had a Miami Vice kind of vibe to it, mixed in with a little ZZ Top. I would bring the drums out a little bit and maybe take out some of the verb. Overall this was a cool little instrumental track.

Sleepwalk -- I've always liked this song. You did a nice job! It sounds great!

This Time -- Good vocal. I think a little less reverb may give this a crisper sound. I liked your nod to George and the bit of "I Feel Fine". You got a good sound overall, the only feedback I would give would be to maybe lower the verb a bit, and maybe raise the vocal just a tad. Nice tune!

The Deep -- Some cool ambiance here. Again, your diversity is excellent! On my computer some of the frequencies of this tune cut out a bit, but I think it is my cheap ol' computer. Anyway, this is one of those things that makes you wonder where it is going all the way through. I like how the sounds came and went. The mix sounded good. This kind of reminded me of a movie theme. Good job!

I say very first VS-880, because it was their first version of the unit...not the very first one off of the drawing board. And, yes that is me playing the guitar I am embarrassed to say!!!

Smile

Hey Elvis,

Now that I know you really played, that was great! The playing on the song was excellent...a friend of mine has a Proteus with an electric guitar patch that sounds very similar to the sound that you got so I wasn't sure if you were playing the guitar or the keys.

Anyway, I have to give you your props! That was excellent!
