Keyboard not working, need help

Perhaps I should have searched for answers in the forum first, but I did not. I will proceed.

I am trying to set up a midi keyboard in Reason 1.1 on a PC running Windows XP. My problem involves the midi keyboard. I ordered a midi cable to plug into my keyboard (simple D to soundcard/midi in/out setup), shut down my system, plugged it in, rebooted, started Reason, followed the instructions in the Reason quickstart PDF in the instructions to configure a soundcard and midi input. But when I was supposed to hear sound out of my computer speakers controlled by my (musical) keyboard, nothing happened. I was not controlling the synth in reason.

My theory is that my computer is not getting any midi signal, or I do not have the propper drivers somewhere (note that I did update my Soundblaster MP3+ drivers after I installed Reason) or something. Is there a simple program that I can download to test my simple midi setup with or CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE?

Please excuse me,
peter.

Can you hear the Reason demos? Just to make sure you have the audio routed properly.

Are your cables hooked up Midi Out to Midi IN. Make sure you didn't use the THRU cable by accident.

There should be a midi status light somewhere in Reason. I think each virtual synth has a little light that blinks when receiving midi but I haven't used it in awhile.

I would also try the Quickstart directions again. Make sure you didn't miss any steps.

Since you added the midi drivers after installing Reason that could be a problem if Reason didn't see the midi port upon install. Check the Reason options and make sure it sees your midi port. You might want to reinstall Reason.

Why don't you try downloading a trial version of another program like Sonar or one of the others from cakewalk. www.cakewalk.com You should be able to record some MIDI stuff on the trial version of those programs (just not save it) which will let you know if it's a software thing with Reason or not. Hope that helps.
