Effect Chain Order ???

What order do you put your plug-ins in, are there any basic rules, or is it a per track thing?

Arrange these effects - multi-instances also :

Most tracks-----------------------------------------------
Compressor/limiter
Eq
Reverb

Optional inserts-------------------------------------------
Chorus - Flange - Phase - etc...
Distortion
Delay
Other

Personally I would go:

1. EQ (to shape sound)
2. Compressor/Limiter
3. Distortion
4. Chorus - Flange - Phase - etc...
5. Reverb
6. Gate (as effect)
7. Delay
8. Eq (used lightly)

Though I'm starting to like multibands to replace the first 2.

This, of course, is only in the case that I need them. some tracks don't need any effects at all except maybe an Eq for blending.
