Unhappy sound is delayed when it comes out of my computer speakers

I just recently started recording (or should I say tried to) with Home Studio 2002. The problem that I am having is that when I play my accoustic electric guitar or sing through my computer, the sound is delayed. Is this an issue with my sound card? In a previous post someone mentioned that virus software can affect CakeWalk. I'll try disabling my Norton, but is there anything else that could be causing this? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Dell Dimension 8100 with Windows 2000 Professional. My sound card is a Sound Blaster Live Value.

Thanks in advance.

Your problem is caused by latency inherent in the sound processing method used in modern computer systems. Using the latest WDM drivers may help reduce this latency but you cannot avoid it altogether. The actual figure is a function of CPU power and many other factors. You can find tons of information on this subject on the Web, just type "latency" in a search engine.

You know, this might sound cynical, but I doubt it would help. Cakewalk is a case in point. They discuss this issue in their manual, and on their website in a couple of places. Most sound card manufactureres also have something similar in their FAQs. If we had another one here, I suspect many people would still not read it and ask these questions.

But a FAQ means we can change the answer from "Turn off input monitoring!" to "Read the FAQ!", and that would be much better...

Which would quickly be turned into a new acronym. . . . RTFF.

The point is to answer the most F-requently A-sked Q-uestions up front as a service,if this existed you could solve a lot of problems immediately and not have to wait for a response.
No knock at you but the question you asked is almost a given for most newbies,a FAQ section could accelerate the learning curve for a lot of people and get them to sonic bliss quicker.

Bear with us. The real jerks haven't even chimed in yet

Just kidding.
The input monitoring thing is a very common pain in the butt.

The search engine's good here too. Give it a try.
Welcome aboard. Good group of guys here.

Yeah, even if some are Red Sox fans. BTW, I'm traveling this week, but I saw the final score of the Yankee game last night - I guess they must have missed the extra point, huh? (20-10???)

I want to get to Sonic Bliss too. Is it near Green Bay?

jpotolese - none of these comments were necessarily directed at you. It's just if you hang out here awhile, you start to see many of the same questions asked over and over. Obviously, it points out some flaw in the software (like maybe CW should disable Input Monitoring as the default configuration, and make you turn it on if you want to use it - rather than vice-versa).

Thumbs up Not the responses I expected

After submiting my response I almost wish I had it back. I didn't mean to sound that way at all, but I'm glad everyone here has a sense of humor. This site is a great resource. I'm glad I found it.

Got to have a sense of humour if you are a red sox fan, an England soccer supporter and a babysitter (private joke, I apologise in advance).

If we were to have an FAQ, the bloody m/soft mixer would be top of my list, closely followed by "input moinitoring" followed by "mic and line in" differentiation followed by "midi recording as audio".

BTW, I'm gonna search back to see what my first post was.......

Done that..........it was the m/soft mixer and AlChuck was the second reply poster!

Shit, its embaressing to go back and read through my first posts.

Reminded me that for a newbie to post here is like exposing yourself to ridicule, as if the world all understands something and you don't. And we all know its not really like that at all.

This forum has helped me enormously and we must continue this tradition in a "no fear" environment. AlChuck plugs away here daily, he posts more answers than anyone and he never becomes cynical in his answers. No matter what the question and how many times he sees the same question.

Most newbies don't even realise there is a search facility until they've posted a few times.

My first was, "how come I can't hear the playback when I'm recording" (the infamous full duplex post).

I see that one less these days, now that almost all sound cards are full duplex. But it was a biggie a few years ago.
