Okay, this isn't exactly a review (well, it just isn't), but I have a question about constructing something of my own. I have a Fostex DMT-8vl digital recorder, and an old soft-shell suitcase. I'd like to find some slabs/blocks of foam, preferrably about 2 inches thick (well, 2 one-inch pieces would work just as well) to put in the suitcase so I can use it to carry my recorder. Egg carton foam would also work, I guess. I've checked out the big stores like Wal-Mart and KMart, but can't find any. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might find something that would work for this? Thanks a lot.

Hi,

Look in the yellow pages under FOAM, you will find lots of companys that sell all sorts of foam types and thickness.

You can also get the stuff in a can,(sold as insulation for those hard to get to areas) wrap your recorder in a plastic bag and spray the stuff into the suitcase. Then you cut it
open with a razor blade once it expands and hardens and you have a perfect custom made foam cushion. Some will ooze back out of the case during the spraying, but you can trim this off and shut the case while it hardens.

The other suggestions sounded good...but I can tell you that my wife purchases foam (for her own home projects) from fabric or craft stores.

Do you have any idea where you can find the spray-can foam? That sounds like a decent idea - I think I'll give that and the nearest craft store a try. Thanks for the suggestions.

It's called Great Stuff. Look in a larger hardware store and they should have it. It's also good for making boats sink proof, hence the name.

I got some kool looking "EGGCRATE" type foam from Target and Sears in the Bedding departments. It's sold as mattress padding. I have used it as accoustic treatment as well as padding. The best stuff I found was Blue at Sears.

Thanks for all of your help. I found some foam at a craft store, and before I had a chance to get back there and buy it, I found some foam scraps in my basement. It seems that my Mom had forgotten about them. Fortunately, there was just enough to snugly fit my Fostex DMT-8vl inside the suitcase. I still won't be throwing it into my car or setting my amp on top of the case, but I will definitely feel more comfortable transporting it now. I think that my next project will be to do the same thing for my guitar case (I just have a chipboard case now). Maybe I'll look into that "Great Stuff" for that.
Thanks again.

If you decide to put foam in your guitar case, cover it with some kind of fabric so that it doesn't touch the guitar. The high-end road case guys usually use crushed velvet or similar.

There is the possibility of a (chemical?) reaction with certain types of foam and some kinds of paint, which screws up the finish of the guitar in a major way.

Otherwise, great idea.
