I got this one Dragon,

The only difference is the pop screen on the 58. I would only use the 57 for micing cabs and drums. I would use the 58 definately on vocals. Especially outdoors because of the wind and the pop screen. And use the 58 on vocals in the studio and the 57 for micing and drums. Hope this helps. These are the two best made, affordable mics ever!

Thanks.
I just laid some vocal tracks with an ancient, beat-to-hell, SM58 and was less than thrilled with the results. I tried a Shure Prologue and it seemed to sound a little bit better although the prologue is a much cheaper mic. Maybe Im just spoiled on high dollar studio mics. I used one of those foam windscreens on the 58...Could that have adversely effected the sound? I was thinking about getting a 57 but if its the same thing as a 58, why bother?

Doesn't the 58 have some kind of bass 'proximity effect' - if you get real close to it, it enhances the bass part of your voice, making it sound more full (and I like it 'cos I need all the help I can get!)

I've used a 57 for vocals and it didn't seem to do that (of course, it wouldn't be the first time I've imagined something that wasn't there

58 for vocals
57 for instruments, and aim it at the paper, away from the cone of the speaker.

Yes the foam windscreen can muffle the sound of a SM58. Iv'e experimented with and without. Also there can be a fair amount of difference from one mic to another....It just depends how many times you've dropped your 58, and how many dings there are in the windscreen.

And for only 99 bucks at Musicians Friend! you just can't go wrong!

Do what i did. Save a little dough, trade in an old crappy mic, and buy a audio technica 3525. If you are friendly with a local music store you'd probably get it for like 220. It is very high quality and requires very little if any eq. go to www.ebay.com they'll have one probably.

I don't know where anyone else is living, but Sam Ash (Edison, NJ and mail order out of NYC) has 57's for $79 and 58's for $89, new. If you catch them on one of their "blow out" sales they sometimes offer both mics for $10 less and you get a free mic stand and cable. Hope this helps out someone's pocket book.
