Fostex FD-8

My partner just got a one of these digital multitracks and we are doing pretty good. I was wondering though about the insert jacks in the back used mostly for compression i heard. i have been able to get my signal from the recorder to the compressor but i can't seem to get the signal back. i have a Y-splitter with 2 1/4 males and 1 1/4 inch male because the compressor has an input and an output jack, but the recorder only has one jack. If anyone has any ideas on how to do this i would greatly appreciate this
