Acoustic Blender/Preamp question..
Blender/Preamp Question:
I have done a crude, lame image to try and illustrate what i am looking for (LOL): Setup1Image What I am after is this: I have an EMG-ACs soundhole Mag PU, and i like the tone I get thru my marshall as50r.. BUT.. i am really missing the percussive sounds of my acoustic, so i am thinking of adding a soundboard transducer or something to just pick up the slaps and body vibrations. I want to blend these two inputs and go into channel 1 of my amp via one blended output.. (because for solo gigs i use channel 2 for vocals...with my band i don't use channel 2, but I could for the transducer if needed...ie 2 outputs) The nice thing about the EMG is i can really crank my amp and not get feedback when playing with my band...and i like the tone of this pu thru this amp... but with the transducer i worry about feedback...(i haven't decided what transducer i will try first..so advice on that subject is welcome also) ![]() I only want a subtle percussive addition to my tone...I hope my little sketch illustrates what I am considering... I apoligize if this is a subject that has been beat to death, but I am a complete moron when it comes to these things..I've read the posts on the raven labs PMB-1 but im not clear on what it does exactly for 2 inouts.. just to throw another bull in the ring, i wonder if i could wire the transducer and the emg together in one stereo jack? the ultrajack for the emg does this i think..i dunno. here the link for the emg: (again, i have the EMG-ACS Acoustic Sound Hole Pickup with the ultra jack) http://www.emginc.com/Acoustic.html thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions,Chris |

CDT,
Fishman makes something very similiar to what it sounds like you are looking for. I know many upright bassist use one to blend piezo P/U's and microphones live and in the studio and the product keeps the controls at your finger tips for adjusting your mix live. Also many acoutic guitar setups use a blend of piezo and internal microphones or soundhole pickups. I would try their website for models and features to find the best one for you and then try retailer websites. Fishman should have a link for authorized dealers on their site.

How about this?
Do a Google search on the term b-band, Pick up the home page and look for their combinations - What I'm thinking about is the setup I have; condenser mic inside on a gooseneck and a second undersaddle ribbon transducer (not piezo). There's an internal preamp that is now available to run on phantom power. Not real expensive as these things go. I would then look at Raven Labs PMB - 1 blender / EQ (with phantom power). It is an ultimate box and has a street price of about $300. Miles ahead of the competition, as far as I can see. So the setup would cost you about $450 including the preamp & blender (not including installation) and you'd have 100 % Class A circuitry - the equal of anything on the market. |

i have access to a taylor 714 blender system kind of like you describe..it is sweet but it feedbacks awful in our practiceven with the rubber "feedback buster" in the soundhole..e room..even when i use the notch and phase reversal..
it simply rocks at mid to lower volumns though...very, very nice tone.. anyway.. i've heard of b-band..i'll give them another look... also Pick Up The World, K&K Sound, Fishman, Baggs and McIntyre... now, by adding the undersaddle ribbon transducer, would i get the percussive elements im looking for? and how easy is it to wire with the emg? (im stuck on that thing..i dunno why but i really like the tone im getting combined with the marshall amp...p-lus no tone loss or feedback at high volumn....lol) thanks treeline... ![]() |

Check these guys out. It looks like they kinda took over where Arnie Lazarus left off with the FRAP.............
www.tranceaudio.com If you're gonna go piezo I would avoid Fishman/Baggs/etc. Either find an old FRAP or something similar. The main thing about piezo pickups is to have a very high-quality preamp for the pickups. They need amplification in the order of about 100,000 times to get to line level. |
