Question ProTools...whats the deal?

So whats the deal with this? Im getting started in audio production, going to go to college, and im going to have my own studio. I have been researching Macs a bit and i read all this fantastic stuff about ProTools! Youve got to buy it seperate right? I mean it doesnt come with Macs?
Anyways i was also really wondering why there isnt a ProTools forum on here???

Cool

Pro Tools is a hardware/software combination.

There is a cut-down version Pro Tools LE, 24 tracks max and comes with the Digi 001, or the Mbox. It uses your cpu for all efx processing. and mere mortals can afford a LE system

Then there are fullblown Pro Tools systems that start around $7000. They have dedicated DSP cards, and interfaces. The computer is really just used for a visual interface, all efx processing is done by the DSP cards.

If you are a business a fullblown PT system is a client magnet.

PT can run on windows or mac. On PC full PT sytems, have hardware requirements that are very tight, and most off the shelf machines won't work. LE systems are more forgiving.

I'm running Cubase, and DP3 on a G4. DP3 has OMF import and export, so I can interface with large PT studios.

Go out to their site and download PTFree to see if you like it.

It has sparse midi features, I prefer Cubase and DP3 for their versititlty.

Don't know why there isn't a PT forum, there are plenty of LE systems out there on both platforms.

Thumbs down

We need to get this protools forum started cause I got permanently kicked off the regular Digi Users conference for telling a guy he shouldnt be posting a whiney post about his dad dying. You know they have churches for getting all of that kind of stuff off your chest. And I didnt even swear in my reply. This guy had almost the whole forum saying they were REALLY SAD about his dad dying. When they dont even know him or his dad. Well my dad died a while ago too. And you dont see me whining about it on one of these forums...theyre here for music and recording music. Man that guy was a "tit baby"...and so was the moderator on that site. So what do ya say...lets get this ball rolling...?

I say negative to the Pro Tools forum....if you want to chat about Pro Tools go to:

http://duc.digidesign.com

I mainly say this not because I dont like Pro Tools...I think its great and all but some people start to rant and rave about it being the ONLY system worth anything in the market. ...its sort of like the "macs are better...no PCs are better" battle which really is a waste of time...then theres the ..."o you use mbox...i have 001...oh you have 001...i have TDM...."....I've noticed for some reason Pro Tools users want the rest of the world to know that they use Pro Tools....or they are mad about no XP support.......which really I could care less....... the bottom line is we all want to make/write/record music....you like the system you use...great.....you use Pro Tools/Sonar/Cubase/Magix/Cool Edit/etc,......whatever works for you ......I say you want to chat about Pro Tools....then go chat on the Pro Tools forum....

just my $.02..

ProTools ...

I never used ProTools till I went to SAE. It's a big deal here. I render my projects on a Mackie hard disk recorder then take them on an ORB (shitty) back up media to a ProTools TDM system or to a Mbox station.

I think that ProTools is just the best tool for audio for midi I use logic or cubase. I have seen nothing else that I can edit audio as fast on as protools so when I go home I am getting a digi 001.

Well all I'll say is that Pro Tools is called PRO Tools for a reason. It is aimed at the PROS and rightly so, it is an excellent package. It is absolutely extortionate though.

The cut-down version have very few features compared to other cheaper packages available, like Cubase VST etc.

I don't think it's fair that your college expect you to buy a Pro Tools system. You could buy a car for the cost.

It all comes down to what you are comfortable with, and probably more importantly what kind of time/money/energy you wanna devote to making tunes. Do you expect to MAKE money some day in the future from making/producing tunes??? If so then maybe PRO Tools is the way to go, if you are just trying to be happy, be constructive, and yada, yada then go with what you feel the most comfortable with. I'm comfortable with Cubase, first system I learned on, will prolly stick with it until I become PRO, eewwwww how I long for the day......

Alchemist3k I think you missed the point of why schools teach Pro Tools.

There are jobs available if you can operate Pro Tools. Ever see a job opening for Cakewalk, or cubase?

My wife is a Microsoft employee, and from time to time they have job openings and Pro Tools experience is required.
