This is dissapointing, somwhat distressing, AND good news for the home reccer.

http://www.ssrstudio.com/sys-tmpl/ns.../publicfolder/

Listen tochange your mind

This vocal wasd done with an ELA M251 E mic and also sent out to an otari tape recorder.

It should sound expensive right? after all, this mic goes for $11,000- 15,000 and it was also recorded to analog tape, right?

To tell you the truth, when I heard it I instantly thought of the vocal on a song that chessrock posted sometime last week. IMHO, similar in the high end, and chessrock's V93 cost maybe $200.

If this is the vocal studios get with $15,000 mics, then its good, no, GREAT news for the homereccer. I have heard $500 mics that sound as good as this.

The engineer said something about using a wack clock , but this is no excuse

Vive la homerecording.

to add insult to injury, the whole track was mixed on a $4000 pair of monitors.

Thumbs down

What I find most distressing about this is that some crappy band seems to think they can directly rip off the Beatles' "Tax Man" like that . . . not to mention those annoying fake British accents!

I don't see where it says anything other than a crappy vocalist getting a crappy vocal track.

It would have sounded just as crappy or maybe crappier on my v93, a Neumann U87, or any other mic. What is your point?

To add further insult to injury, the song sucks, and the vocal has a crap reverb on it.

Cyan, you should know by now that it's the engineer, not the gear. As mics increase in price, the differences in sound quality become less and less apparent. I think the difference between a 500 dollar mic and a 1000 dollar mic would be difficult for most people to spot.

whats my point?

my point is that this vocal (quality of the recording) is not any better than I have heard from $500 mics, and $200 mics in some cases.

If they insist on wasting money on a mic, at least get a mic that sounds great.

So you're saying it doesn't matter how crappy the singer is? An expensive mic should always sound great? Now you're starting to sound like some of my clients.

I do see the point you're making, though, and I think it's obvious that good-sounding mics are getting cheaper and cheaper, so the gap is narrowing -- and it is exciting, isn't it?

chessrock,

I am glad that you get my point.

I agree that a great singer can make the cheapest mic sound like it cost the singer's weight in gold, but I also think that you can make even the worst vocalist at least sound like himself with an expensive mic.

Listening to the sonics of the mic itself, I would NEVER have guessed that that mic cost $12500. Not even $300

Cool

remember that we cant judge the merits of a mic from one persons recording with it.....

with that said, i dont think any mic is worth $15000......even in my wildest dreams, id go up to $1000 for a mic......

The Cactus is supposed to be here TOMORROW!

I'll try to post something in the next two weeks or so demo-ing the Cactus and an NTV. If I have time I'll put up something of the Cactus vs NT2 in omni mode, too.

Dude, the Olsen twins? And I thought I was the only bastard sick enough to be eyeing up something that young but it seems I've met my match. My prediction: every straight man on the planet will want to bang them in less than 5 years.

I don't know if we'll all be having the 67 fantasies, but . . .

I'll be interested to hear about that. I think Blue makes some fine mics. They're one of those companies, I believe, that is on the brink of hitting the market with something that really fills a voide, catches on, and becomes a classic. Perhaps a tube might be just the thing.

I would be very interested to see/hear what Blue can do with a tube.

The cool thing is that the Olson twins are legal in my state. the sad thing is they have been legal for 2 years in Georgia.

In the latest issue of Pro Audio Review,
they list the equipment Celine Dion uses on her new single.
Same mic.
Elam 251.
Sounds good to me...

SORRY GUYS

Can’t say I agree with the popular opinion here.

I gave a listen though my plastic CPU speakers and did not hear any problems.

Concerned, I grabbed the Grados,

I find the recording to be clear & well balanced.

I find the singer’s voice to be recorded smooth, clear & articulate.

The cheesy effect supports the bubble gum 60s sound it is meant
to have, in my opinion.

As far as the singers voice, he is in tune, no world class performance or nor is
it the greatest song ever written but, I would say not bad.

In short, I liked the song, the singer, the performance, & the sound quality.

In fact, if a homer posted this tune, I would have been impressed & post such a reply.

LOVE,
SEAN

Of the indie recordings on the net I've listened to this week...

This one is the best. The mix is fairly good. They could sell this to be on one of those Mary Kate and Ashley straight to video movies.

i don't think a mic is worth $15,000 either.....for the home recorder....but....for the professional studio thats getting work from major labels...maybe. If a $15,000 mic on your equipment list helps you draw the kind of work that pays big money, it would be worth the investment. i would invest 15 bucks to make $100......that $15,000 investment might help them make $100,000.

you damn sure wouldn't want the studios that you are competing with to have one and not you.

you gotta make an impression

its like back in the 80's when we were competing with other bands for gigs....it didn't matter how good your band was....or how bad it sucked, you could draw a crowd if you had a massive stage setup.

It was like.....
"the band that spends the most on equipment is the best!".

our band used to use dummy cabinets.....not even any speakers loaded in them.
some of them were made out of cardboard boxes hehehe

people would look at the stage setup and be going "wow man ...these guys ROCK!"
and in reality we were using minumal equipment....with alot of dummy cabs

so...in that line of thought, you could put $79 mic guts in the $15,000 mic housing and *presto* el cheapo $15,000 mic to add to your impressive equipment list.

How much would it cost just to get the outer casing of an Elam, do you think?

Maybe I could start a new business, here.

BTW, am I the only one here who has noticed the "tax man" ripoff on the tune in question?
