Cubase VST 32 5/Delta 1010 Locks up

Sorry for the Newbie/Cubase cross post:

Okay ... I might have gotten a little bit out of my league ... this is my first experience with computer home recording and it is frustrating.
I have a iMac G4 computer ( 800 Mhz, 512 SDRAM, 2x 80 GB Ultra HD) with which I installed a Delta 1010 rack mount converter unit and Cubase VST 32 5.
I had a "Mac Guy" install the system, because I was sure that I would never be able to handle it.
We'll even with his best efforts, the two systems are installed but the Delta control panel locks up the second I open up the Cubase and then GO BACK to the Delta Control Panel.
So far, I have yet to record anything, because I can't get that far.
I know I sound like a dummy, but what did I (he) do wrong?
He installed an update from Cubase for 5.0. We ran the update, but does the update, "update" Cubase 5.0?
We ran an update and it put in a whole new application.
Any sincere advice will be appreciated.

Unlikely to help but..

I've had a similar set up on a GŁ for a few months, however decided to concentrate on writing a few more tunes first. Like you I was a newbie with plenty of new spare cash.

Anyway, umm, i have the same problem as you have not installed the 5.1.2 update yet, but it does atomatically 'add' and patch bits onto your existing software. I'm not sure if you might have to install Cubase first then reinstall the Delta Drivers after so that Cubase can recognise them. I recently refreshed myself with my gear and to my horror i can't get any sound out with cubase open, even with the Audio Inputs configured correctly. I was using a version of Logic you get with the Delta 1010 to start with, and that seems to work fine. I have 'borrowed' a version of Platinum 5 to see if its Cubase being crap. If so i'd recommend trying to get your cash back and sawpping over. I have a feeling that the 1010 is designed more with the Logic Series in mind than Cubase, hence the freebie.

Laterly you could upgrade to Cubase SX, but then you may have already done that, this post being farily ancient. If anyone has got any useful tips on why Cubase can be such an arse with the Mac and a 1010 help me too??

Cheers

If you have figured your lot out by the time anyone reads this maybe you can give me a few hints ta!!

...sometimes sound cards can be a real pain--so many variables...that's why I bought a MOTU 828...it's designed to take advantage of the FireWire bus that is built into your Mac and many PCs...records straight to your hard-drive very quickly...no muss, no fuss...look into it...sorry I can't help more.
