Question ADAT and Computers

Anyone out there hooking there ADAT up to their computer? I have an ADAT, but want to be able to dump that stuff on the computer to mix, add to it on extra tracks, etc. I like the ADAT because I can record live drums (I'm a drummer) and bring that tape to my partners ADAT and he can dump it on his computer to add other parts.

He uses digital performer. I can't, because I have a PC. I'm looking at possible getting SONAR for my computer, but am open to suggestions. I want to get a computer recording program and an interface.

I want to know if anyone is doing this type of thing, what do you use or suggest to use, what type of interface you are using as well.

Thanks for the help/advice.

I use Cubase for digital editing of my ADATs......... I have the RME Hammerfall 9632 card which has 16-channels of ADAT Lightpipe I/O, plus ADAT sync.........

It works very well........!

I'm using a MOTU 2408mkII with a pair of 20 bit ADATs )well, up untill I got the HD24 that is). I use either Cakewalk 9 or Vegas as the recorder/editor.
Which reminds me, Bruce, weren't you running a lightpipe patchbay?

Here's what I use:

2-ADATs for live tracking
ADAT pcr card (don't laugh) for litepipe transfers to PC
Nuendo for mixing/editing
Wavelab for 2 track editing
Mostly Waves Gold bundle for FX and compression (UAD-1 very soon though)
M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound card for monitoring and occaisionlly adding a track or two.

Yes, the pcr card can only do 8 tracks at a time, but I got a DEAL on a used one. I hook it up to one ADAT, transfer 8 tracks, pop in the second tape, transfer the other 8.

After re-reading your post, why don't you and your partner use your ADATs together with a sync cable and do all your tracking and overdubs with 16 tracks? Then you could transfer to PC.

Flatrock, with the ADAT pcr card limiting you to transfers of only 8 tracks at a time, is it easy to synch each 8 track batch together once theyre in the computer? (Just want to check before we start trying to do this!).

Sure. Pick convenient "start" and "end" points for the transfer and write them down ( I usually use even minutes and seconds-no samples). Close ADAT Connect. Insert tape #2. Re-open Adat Connect and plug in the same start and end times. I use the auto transfer feature and rewind the tape 15 or 20 sec. before the start location, then push play from the PC. Voila! 16 .wav files to import to Nuendo (or whatever) all in perfect sync!

The reason I don't hook the two together is that we both like having them at our own studio. He has the equipment he likes to work with. I would just like to be able to take some of the ADAT recordings/projects I do, and finish them at my house on my own computer...as well as work on projects on my own.

thanks again guys
