How to make the synth sound good

hi.

I have a sound working that is kind of like a jazz organ...lots of mids and lows, but i'm wondering how to eq it so it sounds good in the mix. right now it overpowers everything. Even alone, after being recorded, ir sounds a bit too...i don't know.

It's hard to say without hearing it but from your description and the usual suspects it is probably those lows and mids that are hogging everything up.

Whenever you do any EQ or effects adjustment you should do it while listening to the track in the mix. Play all the tracks and start cutting the bass on the organ at around 125 - 250hz. If you have a parametric EQ set it to the maximum cut and sweep those frequency areas until the organ seems to sit well in the mix. Then bring up the gain on the EQ cut until the organ sounds full but isn't fighting with everything else.

You may need a little compression also but the bass cut should do wonders.

the cuts you specified were very effective. plus, eqing while the whole mix was playing helped a lot too.

I just want to re-emphasize how seriously helpful it is to apply eq while the whole mix is going -- i don't know why i hadn't before.

i allways have 8 mono channels which i run in pairs as 4 stereo.. i have set them up so that allmost no matter what sounds i use i can effectively fit them into these 4 channels and make the final output sound great... i.e. for the two first channels (=1st stereo channel) i have set it up for bass sounds with parametric equalization and on the next two i put emphasis on the 3.5-5 khz spectrum, - this is extremely usefull at times... and soforth... since the supernova allready have a 2 band equalizer, i allmost never need to fiddle with the parameters on the mixer...
