Wha Tha Faaak

Please someone answer this question for me:

I have 1 adat XT (low hours) that I use for my $25 clients,
Now when I record vocals by the Singer, it's fine --SORTA--
then I notice when I play back, I get these little --static pops--
persay -- like tiny crackle sounds

Even though they are $25 clients and cant tell the difference as to what I hear --it's pissing me off -- what the hell is this.

Everything is at 48k/Digital, Adat set to internal, BRC internal
(sync cable from BRC to Adat, Adat out sync into computer)

Wha tha faaaak is this poppin/crackle sound ---

(looking left, looking right) I mixed a few of the peoples stuff with the crackle in it, (believe me I hid it best I could) but told them it was a sample of static to give it a vinyl sound -- they loved it. Forgive me lawwwd

How's your gain structure? I think your levels are too high somewhere in the chain and it's distorting... Check that first. What is your recording chain?

You sure it can't be fixed with a plopfilter on the mic right?

Whaa Thaa Faaaa (part II)

Chain:

Mic into HHB Classic 70 Mic pre
Mic Pre into Composer Pro -compressor/limiter
Out compressor/limiter into Channel 1 of MIXER

I noticed before I even recorded, the level on the ADAT
jumped, kind of like the pop was happening already but I recorded anyway, cause what WE heard going in was clean, coming back out was good too, with the exception (TO MY EAR) a little pop/crackle

The gain structure, hmmm, -- I dont recall it clipping anywhere, but I'll give it a look --- if I remember correctly, the ADAT levels never went into the RED or ORANGE whatever that color is when it bleeds.

I have a POP FILTER on the mic.

But I'll check the gain thing, (scratching my head) all I can do is try

try changing the XT clock to DIG ... since you're using BRC, I don't think you can have both clocks set to internal.
Give it a shot anyway ... I remember having this same problem a while back. From what you describe, it sounds exactly like what happened to me ... and changing the adat clock settings fixed it.

Whaa Thaa Faaaa (part III)

Big Kahuna ---

I tried that, but you know what made a world of difference and fixed everything: It was to CONNECT my wordclock to the BRC

I usually have my DM24 wordclock/MASTER out hooked up to my
MDR24/96, this is were (looking left, looking right) I RECORD TOO

So when I use the ADAT for the $25 crew I tend to umm, shall I say, uuuuh FORGET to take the wordclock plug from the MDR24 and put it on the IN port of the BRC.

tip toeing------skipping ------jogging ---- running---- hauling ass
(from the clients that found out my mistake)

slowing down (they already paid)
