I am new to recording and appreciate any help.

I welcome suggestions for inexpensive mikes that have decent quality for recording vocals (if it can do double duty and record instruments, i.e. flute, as well that would be a bonus.)

Also welcome any suggestions about (inexpensive) equipment/software for homerecording (my coumputer should be able to handle almost anything.)

Thanks!

First of all, Welcome.

Second, what's your budget and what computer setup do you have - processor, RAM, size and speed of hard disk and soundcard (if any).

What you need is a two in-/output semi-professional soundcard, a preamp and a mic.

I haven't looked into soundcards with only two in-/outputs but lots of other people can help you with that.

Preamp, many suggest the ART tube preamp. I haven't tried it but it seems to be a good choice.

Mic, Shure SM57 or SM58 would probably be best value/versatility.

I'm not thrilled with the ART preamp but it's better than nothing and you can't beat the price. For your mic, I suggest an AKG C1000S condenser. You can find it new for around US$200.00 and it will blow away the shure mics (for recording). A 2-in/2-out audio card is also recommended (as previously mentioned). By the way, how many sound sources are you planning to record altogether on a single piece?
