near-field, direct-field, outfield?

Terminaology question:

I know that active monitor means a monitor with it's own amp built in (right?)

But what's the deal on near field vs direct field, etc. The space I'll be dealing in is going to be about 12' by 10' or so and it won't be square shaped.

Help a newbie out!
