I just got my hands into a VSR-880 + VM-3100 Combo, I'm trying to set up the optical link...
I can hear all my conected gear from the headphone jack on the mixer. My question is: How do I have to set them up using the optical cable to monitor the sound from the Recorder, and therefore start recording? Any help would be greatly appreciated... Ctrl303 |

Routing in the VM3100 is a bitch. By default the digital channels come in on 9/10 or 11/12 (I think). You may have to turn them on though. If you have your manual look for how to route the busses.
When I get home I can look at my mixer to see what the procedure is. I know you have to hit a couple buttons and page through the menu to find it. |

First just hook them up and try ch 9/10 or 11/12. If that doesnt work let me know.

before we go any further, let me ask you...
how does the optical link work? I have 7 inputs of audio plugged in the mixer, I want to record them as I send them, each track independently from the VSR, so I can punch in and edit them them separately track by track...will the ONE optical cable that I have coming from the mixer to the recorder suffice? Or do I have to use the RMDB interface for this? I've never used optical before! I don't know if thisa is possible. Cheers |

The optical in/out will function the same as any line level in/out. You just have to make sure that it is assigned to a channel on the Roland. It is a 2 track/stereo connection. If you want to transfer all 8 tracks at the same time you will need the RMDB.
The RMDB is a 8x8 in/out digital interface between the mixer and another recorder and mixer. |
