Confused about channels and tracks...

Hey, I have a question about Cubase. When I re-record over an existing track, intending to delete the previous take, it creates a new wave file under the previous one in the same track. What I mean is that when a click on the audio tab for a certain track where the waveforms are displayed there are multiple waveforms layerd on top of eachother. What does this mean? Something to do with channels and tracks? I would really appreciate if somebody could explain this concept to me.

Hey Ryan,
Cubase allows you to record over a track and will play back whatever track is on top. It's not a good habit to get into, IMHO. It's best to permanently delete the older track.

It is also cubase's answer for not having more than one level of undo.

Basically, it just plays the most recently recorded track for that section. That way you can do an overdub, tailor the ends to make it fit nice and clean- then scrap it and do it over all without affecting the original take. You can also do multiple overdubs and choose which one you want to put on top later.

I just record my punch ins to a different track and drag it up to the one I want when I'm sure I have the take I want. I get less confused that way.

NYM is right though, if you are recording over an entire part. Delete the old one and start over. If you are just punching in a small section, though, it works out well the way it is.
