My toms sound like milk cartons being beaten on in my recording. Whats wrong? Also, The bass drums sound very flat and out-of-the-mix. What can I do?

You need to be more specific about your problem. It could have to do with the type of microphone you are using, and the type of heads. A great recording head is Evans Hydraulics. Use them for great sound without too many overtones. You might be deadening your heads WAY too much. A lot tend to do that, let them ring, and EQ them later if possible.

you may be muffuling the toms to much. like punksurfdrum7 said
you need some good heads. with the bass drum, what do you
meant when you say "a flat bass drum sound" ? if you want a
loud low-end click sound get a super kick bass drum head to go on the back of your bass drum and get a plan remo head to go on the front. put a remo muffuling ring on the front head only.
cut a small hole in the front head down to the right. take a peice
of foam sheet and roll it into a tunnel and put the mic in there. no mic stands!!! place the tunnel with the mic inside at the middle
of the bass drum about 4-6" from the back head. back at the recorder, cut about 18- bass on the channel. on the track cut about 8-9- bass and 10+ hi's. by cutting all the lows on the channel you can get the bass drum gain up to a higher level
without distortion. put a little room revurb on the track to give it
that live sound.
