Mackie HDR24

I know this is an alesis forum but i think it's the best suited for my question.

Im about to buy my Alesis HD24, but someone told me tonight that all the brains form Pro-tools jumped over for the Mackie HDR24, is this true??

He also said that the Mackies sound awesome!!! (i suppose that means the A/D converters are nice)

I still want the HD24.

I have an MDR.

I like it a lot....cant compare it to anything else but I think both units'll get the job done. The question is what you need it do...what you need to interface with, etc.

I chose Mackie because of the issues with Alesis and people not being able to get their adats serviced without being down for like 6 months. That stuff scares me. I dunno...

I think the bottom line is to read all info associated with these units and go with your gut.

You can render tracks with the HDR ... grouping all punch-ins before you export the wavs to your computer. Rendering is not available on the MDR or SDR ... so if you punched in 5 times on a track, you have to manually line those all up in pro tools (or whatever). Maybe this is why those guys liked the HDR so much?
I don't know if the HD24 can do this or not.

No the MDR doesnt render yet. I dont use it in conjunction with a PC so it doesnt matter to me.....thats why it all comes down to how you use it all.

The HDR does though. Does the Alesis render?

I have the MDR, too. I didn't know about rendering until I tried to bring a project into Sonar. What a pain ... but i don't do that very often ... so it's not really a detriment to the machine in my case, either. That said, I still look forward to the "yet" in your statement.
I think as far as sound quality ... all these new HD machines (incl the HD24) are comparable. It comes down to the features and editing capability (oh yah, and tech support). I think the HD24 is pretty comparable to either the SDR or MDR feature-wise ... while the HDR would be a big step up.
If I had an HDR, I doubt I would mess around too much with exporting/import tracks to an external editor since you can do a lot of that right in the box. I suppose there's reasons to, though.

I agree, i doubt there would be a difference the human ear could detect between these beformentioned units.

As far as editing and features the HD24 has all i need, with editing i plan on exporting thru a ethernet card anyhow and the fact that the HD24 functions without a monitor is a plus for me because thats one less thing i have to cart around.

I just got an HD 24 yesterday....it was a floor model and is screwed up so back I go to guitar center today,,anyways.. I like the alesis because the drives are common ide drives from any store that sells computer stuff, 2 drives instead of one as on the mackie. And lot CHEAPER FOR THE COMMON IDE'S.The mackie hard drive is $180.00 for 90 minutes of 24 track. The alesis is $69.00 for same. 2 drive bays means you can go quick from each project. The pull out hard drives are the perm. storage. Dont really have to back-up. If you want back-up you can copy from one hard drive to the other in the alesis. Just a few thoughts that might help somebody,Jim

Yes J these are just a few of the reasons im keen on the HD24.
