looking for a good pair of headphones

im shopping a good pair of headphones, with a budget under 100 bucks preferably around 50. and recomendations, or good buys anyone has had recently?...the primary use would be for listening to projects on my 4 track, and c.d.s on my stereo... thanks..

Suggest you use the search on this site and look around. Also, for your budget stated in your post, you can look at many Sony cans with many prices. Some folks on this site are stanch Sony can fans.

I use Beyer in my home studio; I just got a new pair of Beyer 770 cans but their price was 140 pezzutos plus shipping. Maybe this is out of your budget. But, Beyer may still be making their 250 cans but the price is more than 100 pezzutos.

Whatever you buy, don't buy Koss -- el cheapo cans. I gave away a wireless set to a friend. He likes them because they have a "volume" control, as do most wireless cans.

Don't buy a "Toucan, a garbage can, an ash can, a tin can, a can can [although that might be great] a coffee can, or a can of sturgon eggs.

I use a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M40fs. They aren't the greatest things in the world, but they seem to be decent enough, and well worth the $70 purchase price at Musician's Friend.

side note - It's a shame about Koss headphones. They used to be top notch, much in the way KLH speakers used to be audiophile quality (I've still got a pair of Model 17's from 1973), but are now just garden variety crap.

I thought Koss were good . I see them cans on all sorts of audio people's melons. Namely I just saw a picture of Oysterhead's(and Police's) Stewert Copeland with a pair of Kosses on his head...

I agree on the ATH40's. I have used these and they block a good bit of the sound out, and are loud. And if you look around I saw them for 49.99 somewhere but can't remember where.

I bought a set of AKG K240 and was immediately surprised by how good they sounded...used for everything from vocal overdubs in tracking to another reference in the mastering process...

I've read reports that Allesandro (a guitar amp maker) has some KILLER cans, but they are very steep pricewise...

I went to a shop, and compared every single headphone they had. (Was a music shop, all pretty expensive cans, aimed at studio's etc.) The DT770 was the most accurate, just the best phones in the building. They was pretty expensive, there was only one pair that costed more, but I just had to have 'em. Best cans ever! I love 'em... Oeh I love 'em HARD. If they was masculin, i'd be gay as a fluteplayer. That's how much I love 'em. Yes, I does.

I use sony MDR-V600 they wotk great and are only a little over 100.

but seriously, i use samson ch700's. ($39.95 from zZounds.com) they're closed back which i've learned is very important for recording vocals and times when you don't want your headphones bleeding into the vocal track! which should be all the time, but, i've also heard a LOT of great things about sony headphones too.

I used to use a Pair of Senheiser HD433's, and they did the job, used to use them to track everything with. not being enclosed, they used to bleed slightly...

i've got a pair of AKG 141M's, which are one of the most widely used headphones for studio tracking apparently... they sound great, and I use them for comparing mixes and radio work. should be roughly in your price range...
