Question The Big Island Recoding Resort

Hi friends, I got a little OT question to ask to you guys ...
I have the opportunity to build a studio here in Brazil in a Tropical Paradise Resort called the Big Island ...
Opening it's door you'd be at just 50 foot from ultra-light-green- -warm-ocean water and beside it you could stay at the hotel
( totally decorated with native stuff ) ...
The gear would be a Protools HD2, Control 24, Avalon VT 737 sp, Millennia STT1, HV3D, Oram Octasonic, U87, AKG 414, C12VR, etc.
My question is: in your opinion, is this a big deal? The fact of the studio will be located in a Tropical Paradise Resort would be a good approach to international artists?

Thanks for your attention people, sorry for the OT.
See ya, Kelpo from Brazil.

A very interesting idea. It pretty much comes down to your business plan. How are people going to know about it? Having a great motivational location is a big plus but before artists spend a few grand to just come down there they are going to want to know what you can do. If you have enough of a reputation and industry contacts already that's not a big deal but otherwise you will need to do a lot of international advertising.

Let me know if you need some help. I lived in Mexico for awhile and wouldnt mind doing a stint in Brazil

I think you would need to make sure that the location doesn't make it more difficult for your local clients to use the studio, would it make it more expensive for a local band to record? Is it going to be a problem to transport gear to the studio? Is it too far away for a local band to travel to on a daily basis? (I'm assuming they won't get free accomodation). The reason I say this is that I think that local bands/ productions will still be your bread and butter.
As far as international clients go the location will probably be a big attraction, the problem is that only the really big acts can afford to take the extra time and expense to record in "paradise" so you will need to ensure that the facility is absolutely world class.
Of course I could be wrong.

Good Luck.

Very well pointed guys, I'm thinking about starting with national artists and little by little expand to the international market. So I'd start with lower prices, promotional packages including lower taxes for accomodation.
The place is located about 1 hour and 30 minutes by car, then 20 minutes by boat from Rio de Janeiro Maintown, so I guess it would be better for the artist to stay accomodated at he hotel.
No problem to transport gear and staff because we got our own boats.
It would be a little more expensive for a local band to record, but not too much expensive at all for a place like this ...

Thanks, Kelpo

I wouldnt open a studio on some island and expect to attract established artists just bec I have a pro tools rig and some nice pres and comps. You dont start out there. The very fact that youre asking the question on homerec implies that you havent worked with any established national bands and are an unknown in the recording community. Who is going to try you out on your island? People go to remote places to record bec they know the engineers and the studio has a long list of ~*~*hits*~*~ ..... in the top 40 sense of the word. The beach, the ocean, the farm, the cabin, mountain air, etc are all gimmicky nice extras, not the main event.

Eu nao sei se artistas establecidas vao gravar no seu estudio, mas eu sim quero! Pelo amor de Deus, convide-me! A unica coisa melhor que gravar seria gravar num paraiso tropical cheio de brasileiras bonitas.

Smile

I'm not dreaming about being Madonna's engineer, even though I've received extragood complements from one of the most important engineers here in Brazil from a recording that I did with Cakewalk 16 bits 44 KHz and a sm 57 ... I dream about offering Madonna and her engineer or whomelse a magic place to get inspiration and motivation and a good set of gear to play around with low cost.
Ofcourse I'm dreaming, but I always believed that our dreams can, one day, turn to reality.

No, I'm just an ordinary American. But I've been learning Portuguese for almost three semesters in my university (my major is Spanish). Eu adoro a lingua; e muito legal. Este forum e um lugar bom para usa-lo um pouco, ja que um brasileiro aparece aqui de vez em quando.

Unfortunately, I don't have the resources to visit Brasil right now, although I would really love to. Someday, for sure. I have to save my money for my study-abroad trip to Spain next semester...I'll need every cent. Espero conseguir viajar um pouco em Portugal.

Tex--sounds good to me.

Dolemite, that reminds me that the Japanese word for 'thank you' (origato) actually comes directly from the Portuguese one (obrigado). When the first Portuguese went to Japan, the natives didn't have a word for the concept of thanks, so they just took the Portuguese one. Neat, huh?
