How bout TWO RNC's as master comps vs an STC8?

Hi David!

I'm sorry I got in late on this thread...

Although the RNC can handle some "peak" limiting functions OK under some
circumstances, I wouldn't recommend it for brickwall limiting
requirements. With a processing latency, it'll let spikes through that
are 75 microseconds or less. HOWEVER, for many applications, one can set
the RNC at 25:1, fastest attack/release in normal mode and achieve
decent results for avoiding digital clipping. When doing various dubs to
limited dynamic range media (DAT/Cassette), I'll cascade two RNCs: the
first in SuperNice mode, with ratio at 6:1, attack and release controls
at 2o'clock (adjust threshold and make up gain for 4 to 6 dB average
gain reduction levels), the second RNC is setup as a peak limiter with 2
to 4 dB of /fast/ gain reduction. This combination gives the
transparency of the first RNC "gain riding" the signal, while the second
acts to control the peaks. With this scheme, I've been able to get
/very/ dense levels to DAT without overages without sounding classically
compressed (read that: squashing the shit out of the signal).
