Kick Drum Tuning

This may seem kind of specific, but is there anybody who could tell me the best setting (pressure range) for a 22 x 22 bass drum head (batter side). I have the rest of my toms at 78-80. It would be mainly used for rock and jazz. Thanks a bunch.

22 inches deep? are you kidding? I would love to find a kick 22 inches deep. where did you get it?

Most any custom drum maker can make you any size bass drum you need. Of course, you're gonna pay something like $1,200 for it.

Back in the old days they were called bass drums. So my advice is go low.I do my lugs up till they are finger tight then go about one and a half turns ,just to go over the totaly slack state and into some tone. Another way of looking at it is to think of the sound of your toms go from high to low and the "kick" should sit lower than your floor tomin about the same range of tonal difference.
Of course every drum has a sweet spot so you might try just experimenting with that idea.The other thing is head chioce the type of hesad makes all the difference,so while it is to expensive to go out and buy 10 different heads just try a different one when its time to change,I am using the remo m3 powerstroke and I use no damping in my drum and get the results I like.I have 4 kick drums and have played (rock) for twenty years so I know what works in that feild but drums are just drums they all behave the same its just that some behave more the same than others good luck.

It is a natural rule that if using dampening as well, your batter side kick drum should be tuned as low as possible without acheiving a wrinkle effect on the head. This will ensure a great low end kick, with punchy sustain. But be warned, with 22 inches for resonance, you will definately need muffling.

don't worry about pressure settings for kick. You need to have the heads so loose that the guages usually don't read right anyway. they might read about 70ish...but I don't use the tension dial for kick drums.
