Problems panning, need help

I am using the VM3100 pro for all my recording. I just state using i and am having a hell ofa time panning. pan on the mixier and when recording it sounds right, yet on play back it is coming out of bth sides. I use Cubase 5.0 for mysoftware and set the pan on that also, yet if i pan it to the left it is really loud, to te right, there bu not so loud. i cant get a true pan. and it is drivig me nuts
