Getting changes to stick in PA9

I've had this problem in PA9 for a while. Whenever I make a change in volume or panning in the middle of a song (while I'm playing it back), the change won't stick when I rewind back to the beginning. I'll have to remember whatever changes I made, and do them again, because the faders just pop back to wherever they were.

Anybody familiar with the problem that I'm talking about? Is there any solution? I've checked around the various option screens, and so far I haven't seen anything. But I'm far from a PA9 expert.

I use SONAR so I'm not sure if this option is available in PA9.

It sounds like you want to automate the the Faders/Pan knobs in different portions of the song so that the levels adjust themselves to the settings you choose.

1.In SONAR, right-click the fader or control that you want.

2.Select arm for automation

3.Use the automation toolbar to select the recording option.

4.Click the record automation button to start recording and adjust the fader/pan as the song plays through. Stop recording.

5.Click enable playback automation, rewind the song and listen.

If PA9 supports automation, then it should be similar to the procedure above. Think of it as recording a new track that just records the movement of the sliders.

It actually isn't that (but thank you for replying! ). All I'm trying to do is, say I'm halfway through a song... the one I'm working on right now is a really complex mixing job, one of the toughest I've ever done - and it's been tough to get the levels right. So I'm halfway through the song, and find that I'd like track 4 a little more to the left, and tracks 7 and 9 are too loud. So I make the adjustments, rewind back to the beginning of the song to listen over, and the faders are all back to where they were. So I have to guesstimate where I had everything set before.

Do you get what I mean? The problem could be related to the automation feature, but that's not something I've played with before. I can only think of one time when I wanted to change a volume or pan in the middle of a song, and I just did it myself.

I haven't used PA9 in quite awhile, but there is some sort of "snapshot" button in Console View that causes this behavior. I believe if you click this button it takes a "snapshot" of the fader settings and resets it to that setting when you restart the playback. You must have clicked the button inadvertently (one of the many reasons I hate the Console View) and now it's resetting the faders to the position they were at when you clicked the button.

Not sure how to diasable it, but check in your help menu for instructions. You probably can get around it by taking another "snapshot" AFTER you've made your fader adjustments.

I have always hated Console View, and Sonar makes it able to work without ever having to open up the Console View. Another reason to consider upgrading to Sonar.

Thanks for the tip. I'll check that out. The funny thing is, halfway through my mixing, it started keeping the changes I was making.

You might be right, though. Maybe it is time to consider an upgrade. One thing I can't stand is how often the program seems to crash. I had very occasional crashing issues in the past, but since building a new computer, it seems to happen more often. I suppose it could have something to do with heat, since both my CPU and video card are overclocked, but that's the only problem that's demonstrated any kind of instability. Hmm.

I hate Windows sometimes.

Anyway, I'm going to resume mixing tonight, for the FOURTH time, and we'll see if that snapshot button is causing my problem.

I don't use the Console much, but you might try the 'event view'- it has the automation settings listed in it, you can toggle it to show only the audio events. (It's in pa8, should be in 9.) It's a good place to get a handle on stray stuff like that, and edit them out.

are you automating the mix when it happens or are you just setting relative levels? if you setting levels, you have to right click on the channel strip you're trying to apply the new level to and then click on edit automation. then you click on the little eraser icon, and click-drag it on the little screen. if you're doing automation, you have to either hit the record automation botton or you can use the snapshot option.

have you tried going to the track view,scrolling over to the volume and pan columns,and changing each of them to (-1) ?
this will give you control over your levels and they will stay put. you will need to do this each time you start a new project.
this is for recording audio. not midi.
this instruction is somewhere in the manual.
