Unhappy help a newbie: Cakewalk system crashes

Hey all, I'm a longtime home recording freak but I'm new to this site. I just started recording again after an extended break, and what I've done for my latest batch of songs is to record the tracks on a friend's Tascam 424 (in his garage; I can't record in my small apartment) and now I'm trying to mix down the songs from the 424 into Cakewalk Guitar Tracks 2.0 (the free demo... just testing it out). I was hoping to mix songs down to a single track in Cakewalk, make .wav files, and burn audio CDs.

The problem is that Cakewalk is crashing almost every time after about 4 minutes of recording from the line in. This never happened last week when I was doing my initial tests with Cakewalk using a line in direct from a guitar amp.

The system is an AMD 1.2 Ghz processor, 512 Mb RAM, running Win XP home edition--I would expect that should be more than enough. The soundcard is a low-end SiS 7012, but it should be full-duplex and capable of this relatively simple recording job. I've disabled my LAN connection and turned off the screen saver while recording to prevent any unwanted interruptions.

Cakewalk GT2 warned me when I installed it that it's not set up for Windows XP, so maybe I should expect this--has anyone else had any luck running this program on XP?

What I REALLY want to know is: do you think the problem is the Cakewalk software, my system, or just the soundcard, or something else entirely? Thanks a million for any advice y'all can dish out.

If you run GT2 on a WinXP system, I'm not surprised that you get trouble. As Cakewalk.Com states: "System Requirements: Windows 95(OSR2)/98". I am really surprised you get it to run at all...

So: I think it's a "crash" between GT2 and WinXP, and you won't be able to fix it. Why not try GuitarTracks Pro?
