MP3 editing

I'm looking for a cheap little program that I can use to edit MP3 files. i.e. take out dead air space, unwanted noise, etc. I know there are programs that will edit other file types, but are there any that will edit MP3?

Sound Forge XP 4.5 can do that. Price is around $50 ... well worth it in my opinion.

Thanks for your replies! I've just downloaded Goldwave and will try it out tonight. If anyone else has any suggestions I'd love to hear them!
