Help needed in selecting a great pair of mic pres- style of V76 or 1073 on a budget.

I am looking for advise on the best mic pre's for recording acoustic guitar.
They will be used mostly for "acoustic guitar" and an occasional vox.

Budget is tight. I have the Control 24 so whatever pair I get would have to be a
significant improvement over the Focusrites. I don't know if that's possible with a 1k price
budget. Maybe I should wait till my budget increases. or just but one good pre for now.

I have read up on the ART Tube MP Personal Tube Mic Preamp, GRACE DESIGN 101
MIC PREAMP, Joe Meek and such. Am I wasting time with these guys?

Anyone know of a great pair of pres in the $500-1000 range that would compete with the
big boys? I've had API's, Neve 1073's, Telefunken V76's, Avalon and Manleys in the past
but all is gone now due to $$$. It's a drag but life goes on.

V76's and 1073's were my all time favorites. Would love to have something that comes
close to either of these. I know! I know! I'm dreaming but maybe there's a puppy out there for me.

Thanks.

Leon

Cross posting is posting the same topic in multiple forums (actually it's called multi-posting which is a little different from cross posting for all you usenet geeks).

Do not cross post on this BBS. It is a violation of the agreement you signed when you activated your user account, and is therefore a violation of the agreement you signed with your service provider.

If your topic has merit and is in the proper forum, it will be answered 99% of the time. If you had taken the time to look around, you would notice that very few posts slip by without being addressed. Sometimes the proper forum is difficult to find, so just pick the one that seems like you'd get the most exposure in. If your topic dies off, then you should feel free to try it in another forum.

Reasons cross posting is not allowed:

1) The purpose of a threaded discussion group is to ensure that topics are addressed effectively. When you post into multiple forums, you will get different responses in each thread, which hinders productive discussion.

2) It is a waste of disk space and bandwidth.

3) It makes searches less effective.

4) It is considered rude, especially to those members who do read most of the forums (of which there are hundreds). Cross posting has been considered rude for 20 years, so don't be insulted when somebody calls you on it.

If you continue to cross post you can be banned from the site and your ISP may be contacted.

Now that you're aware of the way things work, welcome to the BBS. There are a lot of good people around here, so let's all play nice.

Hi, I tried various cheap and mid-priced pre¡¦s including Focusrite (not the Red series), Art, Mindprint, Behringer and was never really enthusiastic about them etc except for the Behringer Ultragain which I kept because it¡¦s a reasonably good extra stereo pre for really very little money.

I¡¦m quite happy with my VC1-Q now. Strangely enough I¡¦m not a big fan of the compressor, which colors the sound just a bit too much for my taste (perhaps I still have to learn how to use it effectively), but I do like the pre (quiet, warm, lots of gain, and no distortion or artifacts) and love the equalizer and enhancer. Basically it¡¦s a very good sounding unit which sounds great clean but also really lets you modify the sound if you want without going into distortion, or in other words if you turn the knobs something actually happens and you can hear it (I always like that in a unit ƒº).

I used various mics with it such as NTK and TLM103 but also cheap ones like AKG C2000B and they all sound good.

TRY THE AUDIO BUDDY (MIDIMAN)

i had the art toob, it has it's place, great for driving bass guitar, but the audio buddy is cleaner, and has 2 channels instead of only one, and has phantom power, and is cheaper.

no tube though.

and thanks for the cross posting lessons, people.
