minimal mic on drums

hello.
Im going to help out mixing an play for the school and out mic resourses are small
So i need some help to find techiques to use as small amount of drums as possible...
the thing that would be great would be a technique with just 3 mics (2 overheads rode NT3 and like an sm58)

all ideas well come... give as much information as possible

I once got a really nice sound using a single pair of Dynamic AKG D770's hung above the kit... but it depends on the room. is the drummer going to be on the playstage?
I use NT3s as overheads, and they pick up an awful lot of info, and if your hard pressed, then just use them, and put the SM58 pointed at the kick drum... you will probably get enough of the snare on the overheads, try to point one at the snare/hat.

Maybe set up the NT3's as an X/Y pair centered on the Snare/Hat area. Then put the 57 on the kick. That will give you a pretty natural sounding drum panorama- just make sure your snare sounds OK through the overhead because that's all you've got.

It will take a little fussing with where to put the mics . I typically have them right over the drummer's head- maybe 1 ft above the cymbals. (Its been a while...) Take the time to play with the mics a little, though, and you'll be able to get a good sound with just those 3 mics. I did it exactly that way several times with AKG c1000's and a 57.
