#1 UK hit recorded on cassette 8 track!!

Found this at www.sospubs.co.uk/search
The article is "Today Derby, Tomorrow The World!"
The #1 hit was recorded in a musician's home bedroom,
and the vocal was done with a Realistic PZM microphone!
In fact a Neumann U87 was ditched in favor of using the PZM.
The name of the hit is "Your Woman".

Just thought this "might" be interesting!

Just double checked the article name and found it via the search function.
It also will work if you put "today derby" in the search field.
Should also work if you put in "white town".

Hope that helps, and I haven't heard the song yet either!

It's a catchy little lo-fi track based around a trumpet(?) sample lifted, I think, from a 1920's jazz record. They guy who made the record used to post regularly on the SOS forum. I haven't seen him on there for a while, though. He's probably too busy with all the new musical gear he bought with the proceeds of his hit record.

Aaahhhh. I've heard that one like a gazillion times.

I hate to say it, but it doesn't really surprize me how it was recorded. The only thing on it non-electric / keyboard generated are the vocals.

You gotta' tip your hat to the guy for writing a hell of a catchy tune, though. Just a great idea. It would have sounded good if it were recorded with radio shack mics on a cassette deck for what it's worth.

I'd bet it would have sold at least 100 more copies if he had used a Lucid or an Apoge a/d converter, or gotten it "professionally" mastered! ! !

What the hell was he thinking?! Amateurs.

In the article it does say that with the profits of his #1 single, he did buy a
Tascam DA-38 digital 8 track though, in fairness to all you digital lovers!

Tecnically it was...tascam cassette 8-track and Realistic (Radio Shack in the UK) PZM.

I suspect you knew that, though...

I was tryining to find a way to finish that sentence off . . . and realized my error. But the statement is fitting, though, so I kept it as is.

Would have still been a number one hit if he had used a radio shack mic and a cassette deck instead of . . . um . . . well . . . a radio shack mic and cassette deck if you know what I mean.

The guy's name is Jyoti Mishra, and he's a nice guy...I've swapped a coupla e-mails with him.

His website, I think, is at www.bzangygroink.co.uk - some good stuff on there, plus the odd download of his current stuff.

---edited to put the correct link up---

One of the best pop singles of the '90s. Not bad at all.
