i've used both and think they are both fabulous mics but the d112 seems to have a bit more click/top end on the kick but I think the 52 has a bit more on the low end. Needless to say, they both rule over an audix d4.

From what I've read, the Beta 52 only goes up to 10khz on the highs.
The AKG D112's high end extends up to 17khz. It's also got a bit of a peak around 4khz. I've never actually tried the Shure, but some guys do say they have a bit less "snap" to 'em when the beater hits the head. The last D112 I got about a year ago was brand new (factory sealed) from a guy on ebay for $150. The first one I got years earlier was bought before the price shot up. |

Also consider the Sennheiser e602, which I have, and which sounds great (as long as you have that front kick head on, preferably with a hole cut in it), or the Audio-Technica ATM25, which I've never used, but a gentleman by the name of Terry Date (Soundgarden, Fishbone, and so forth) uses when he produces artists.

You won't lose with either. The Beta extends lower than the AKG. That was the driveing factor for me in choosing the Beta.

I guess you would have to explain ....'get it to work'.
Are you not getting the sound you want? I'll go with that assumption. The whole in the front is a good idea for those that want a more punchy sound. A front resonant head without a whole is used mostly for jazz and the mic is placed infront of it. I have my beta mounted on a 6" mic/tripod stand. The beta is right inside the drum, offset from the beater but pointing at it. I put it about half way in. This captures the tone of the drum to get a nice fat sound, while also providing the snap from the beater stricking the head. |
